It’s about time | LeBron James

The most enormous celebrities, those larger-than-life characters with immense cultural impact, occupy a kind of hard-to-quantify space in the zeitgeist. They’re human, of course; that’s what makes them compelling. But they often come to represent something beyond themselves. In LeBron James’ case, for me, he’s become a measure of the passing of time. An aide-mémoire of my own mortality. Yes, his defiance of the aging process has been heartening proof that while Father Time comes for us all, the pace isn’t fixed. But the growing number of gray hairs in his beard, the players born after he was drafted who now meet him in transition, are persistent reminders that time marches on.

On the one hand, as anyone who has experienced it can attest, aging is exhausting. Battles once worth fighting no longer seem worth the effort. An extra 30 minutes of quiet solitude starts to feel like life’s greatest luxury. So perhaps that instinctive understanding clouded all of our assumptions about where LeBron would choose to finish his career. Surely, by now, he had to be tired. Why not golf with Stephen Curry in northern California while playing probably meaningless (but highly entertaining) basketball? Why not head back to Miami, where Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo could shoulder the defensive burden, allowing James to hand over the offensive keys and spend whatever time remained by the pool? Or why not end it in Cleveland, where he’s already beloved, where the stakes are lower, where the narrative is clean and tidy? Wouldn’t that be easier?

But something else comes with aging and the passing of time: the growing sharpness with which the fleeting nature of life comes into view. James may have served as a metaphor for time’s relentless forward march for everyone who watched him. But in his own life, it was moving just as fast, if not faster, as it does for the rest of us.

That, it seems, was the real motivator of his decision to shock the league and sign with the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday. In a statement released via his own X account, James said he was grappling with his basketball mortality at the end of his 2025-26 campaign, which marked the end of his eight-year stint with the Los Angeles Lakers – the longest continuous stint of his career. “I thought I was done when the season ended. I wasn’t ready to announce it, and I knew I needed some time to really decide, but I was pretty sure I played my last game,” James said. “I was honest at that last press conference [after the Lakers were eliminated by Oklahoma City] when I said I needed to look at myself and decide if I still love this game. I still truly love this game, and I have more to give.”

James went on to explain that the decision wasn’t motivated by money – a claim easily corroborated by the two-year, $8m veteran’s minimum contract he signed – nor by family, who are currently split between Los Angeles, Tucson and Akron. The deciding factor? A new challenge, fresh excitement and one last good-faith shot at the ultimate prize. “What am I really playing for at this point?” James said in the statement. “I still want to sacrifice. I still want to work. I still want to grind. I still want to compete, to win and to have a chance at the feeling of winning a championship.”

LeBron James (left) talks with the 76ers’ VJ Edgecombe after a game last season in Philadelphia. Photograph: Chris Szagola/AP

Acquiring a player of LeBron James’ caliber – even at 41 years old – on a minimum contract simply doesn’t happen. But after seriously considering retirement, James’ freedom to choose virtually any destination came at the cost of a massive pay cut. Sticking it to his former employer was, of course, a fringe benefit: it’s been widely reported that James felt disrespected by the Lakers’ brass. Even to an outside observer, it was clear the franchise was eager to turn the page, building around 27-year-old Slovenian wunderkind Luka Dončić after pulling off the sports heist of the century. So even after James dragged an injury-depleted Lakers roster beyond the first round of the playoffs in April, the divorce felt inevitable. And like any middle-aged man going through a divorce, it appeared to elicit some genuine introspection.

The decision to sign with Philadelphia makes sense when viewed through that prism. That of a man who knows his time playing the game he loves, that which has defined his life, is rapidly coming to a close. A man forced to ask whether the juice is still worth the squeeze and, if it is, to what end. In some ways, signing with the Sixers is risky proposition: it’s a brand new city and team, with a lot of big names and personalities (in addition to Process™ holdover Joel Embiid, there’s All-NBA guard Tyrese Maxey, last season’s Rookie of the Year finalist VJ Edgecombe and newly acquired Twitch-streaming NBA finals MVP Jaylen Brown). And then there’s the health issues, which have plagued Embiid and the franchise at large for years. But that’s also what makes the opportunity compelling. Delivering Philadelphia its first NBA championship in more than four decades would instantly become one of the defining achievements of James’ career. And with one of the league’s most talented starting lineups, the Sixers offer him the one thing he appears to have spent the summer searching for: a genuine chance to win one last title.

One thing I often find myself pondering when considering the passing of time is the idea of alternate timelines – parallel realities where a single decision changes everything. The twilight of LeBron James’ career is full of them. What if he had stayed in Cleveland in 2018? What if the Lakers had never landed Dončić, extending James’ stay in Los Angeles? And perhaps most intriguing of all: what if the New York Knicks hadn’t won the championship this year? Had they fallen short, Madison Square Garden would have offered James perhaps the most irresistible final act in basketball. Win, and he’d deliver the Knicks the title they had chased for more than half a century. Lose, and he’d at least have the chance to write the ending himself. According to his agent, Rich Paul, that alternate reality came remarkably close to becoming this one. On the Game Over podcast, while reviewing a now-infamous whiteboard of potential destinations with co-host Max Kellerman, Paul paused on New York. If they hadn’t hoisted the Larry O’Brien in 2026, Paul said, “there would be no board. He’d be going to the Knicks.”

Instead, a different timeline prevails. One that’s intriguing, suspenseful and even bizarre: LeBron James, at age 41, is a 76er. In Philadelphia, he can attempt to do what no NBA player has ever done: win a championship with a fourth different team. He can have fun playing basketball, free from the enormous shadow the past version of himself casts in somewhere like Miami or Cleveland. He can grapple with his basketball mortality while trying, in equal measure, to stave it off. He can try and make the most of what’s left of his time.

The most enormous celebrities, those larger-than-life characters with immense cultural impact, occupy a kind of hard-to-quantify space in…

[434
49,48,459,82
post-825652","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-nba","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-nba","tag-sports
["GET
