But what they built will outlast the sting of a season that came three strokes short.

The 2026 exit hardly captures how the Cavaliers’ leading pack — Ben James, Bryan Lee and Paul Chang — spearheaded some of Virginia’s most celebrated golf in years.

For a program that had already established itself as a consistent source of talent — Virginia has now made 21 total NCAA Championship appearances, including 11 under Coach Bowen Sargent — these three Cavaliers set a new benchmark with three PGA TOUR cards, the most in program history.

Thanks to the creation of PGA TOUR University in 2021 and the sheer depth of the Cavaliers’ lineup, Virginia has three players touring professionally right out of college for the first time ever.

James, a four-time All-American and Ben Hogan Award finalist, earned the highest distinction, gaining full membership on the PGA TOUR for two years as the highest-ranked individual in his class.

“To actually have this thing … it’s unbelievable that it says my name,” James said in an interview with PGA TOUR U.

The tour card now says his name, but it was within reach all year long. James is the second player in collegiate golf since PGA TOUR U was established to hold the top spot wire-to-wire throughout an entire season.

Chang and Lee earned PGA TOUR Americas cards by ranking among the top 25 individual collegiate golfers, finishing their college careers in 2026. They placed No. 13 and No. 17, respectively, in the final collegiate standings.

Those milestones were years in the making. Over two decades with Virginia, Sargent has built a program successful in producing professionals, but this class has represented the fullest realization of the culture he has envisioned.

“[Sargent] was obviously a very big key to having us all come together,” Lee said in an interview with PGA TOUR U. “Being able to make such great relationships, learning so many things, making so many memories, and it’s just a cherry on top being able to play well and achieve things that we’ve never been able to achieve.”

The Cavaliers’ success became inseparable from the relationships the team shared, a veteran core that elevated one another over multiple seasons and passed that culture on to Virginia’s younger players.

Where their futures are headed speaks to the stories that got them to this point and to the impact of the program that drove them to success. For James, reflecting on the journey to the PGA TOUR highlights a foundational belief in the program long before even arriving on Grounds.

“I committed [to Virginia], and I didn’t even visit,” James said. “[My family] didn’t come from much … I decided to stay here, and it’s the best decision I’ve made in my life probably.”

The collegiate success is already translating professionally, just over a month after the NCAA Championship. James led the pack after 36 holes in the RBC Canadian Open in his first career professional start, and after qualifying for his third U.S. Open, he made the cut and tied for 23rd at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. Lee also qualified for the U.S. Open days after wrapping up his amateur career with an eight-stroke win at the 2026 Kenridge Invitational.

When James and Lee started at Virginia, the program was steady and respected — but not yet a juggernaut.

Sargent, who was recently named ACC Coach of the Year for a second consecutive season and secured a contract extension through 2030, recognized the potential of what Virginia golf could be the moment he secured their commitments.

“I was like ‘Look, the two of you guys can come in here together … and we can change the history of the program,’” Sargent said in an interview with PGA TOUR U. “And they changed it. There’s no doubt. Those two guys changed the direction of this program.”

The redirection, of course, was not without its learning curves. Lee, to his own admission, used to struggle on the greens. He spent four hours a day on a putting mat to completely rebuild his routine and technique.

“I used to be a terrible putter,” Lee said. “People won’t believe that. The only person that knows that is probably my brother.”

It is a harsh self-criticism for a player who became one of the most reliable putters in collegiate golf. What Lee once defined as a weakness became the part of his game he has trusted the most under pressure — and ultimately allowed his confidence as a competitor to grow.

Chang, who was born in China and moved to Virginia from England, entered an American collegiate recruiting landscape that was entirely foreign to him.

Before becoming an All-American honorable mention and an anchor in Virginia’s 2026 season, Chang’s journey on Grounds began with a two-year stint on Virginia’s club golf team, cold four-mile scooter rides back and forth to Birdwood and a consistent stream of emails to Sargent. Chang eventually secured a meeting with Sargent after impressive performances in high-level amateur tournaments.

“For two years, on the other side of our practice range, every day this kid was out there pounding golf balls,” Sargent said.

Unlike James and Lee, who served as crucial pieces in Virginia’s lineup for four seasons, Chang practiced religiously until it earned him a roster spot in 2023 — only to continue transforming his game into a PGA TOUR Americas card.

Chang’s improbable path from club golfer to a professional is another example of the environment Sargent cultivated — one where talent is developed as relentlessly as it is recruited.

With three newly awarded tour cards and Sargent’s extended tenure as head Coach, this group left behind a legacy that future Cavaliers will inherit. That legacy is rooted in a rigorous work ethic, close-knit culture and raw talent.

Now, as incoming sophomore Michael Lee and incoming senior Josh Duangmanee headline Virginia’s returners and the Cavaliers welcome three freshman recruits, they enter a program where consistent championship contention is matched by a demonstrated path to the PGA TOUR.

Four NCAA Championship appearances, back-to-back ACC titles, a runner-up trophy and a level of dominance no Cavalier golf…

[443
49,48,622,82
post-826258","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-golf","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-golf","tag-sports
["GET
