The luck of the draw did not fall in favour of two of the favourites in the Men\u2019s 60kg category, but the crowd was treated to a bout worthy of a final as India’s Sachin Sachin defeated Canada’s Keoma Al-Ahmadieh on Day 2 of Boxing.<\/p>\n
Prior to their encounter in Hall 5 at The SEC Centre, Sachin boasted the better record against the Canadian.<\/p>\n
The favourites had twice met in the past year \u2013 the first, a unanimous decision victory for the Indian, before a close 3-2 split verdict went the same way in February.<\/p>\n
The opening round was a tale of aggression from Al-Ahmadieh, as Sachin (pictured) looked to find composure on the back foot. A difficult call for the judges who saw quality from both boxers, but gave the opening round to the Indian in a 3-2 split decision.<\/p>\n
Sachin showed the quality he has become known for as a former Commonwealth Youth Games gold medallist, delivering a second round that would require a dominant display from his opponent in the final three minutes.<\/p>\n
Al-Ahmadieh worked hard to take the third round, but could not overturn the result, which ended in a 4-1 split on points.<\/p>\n
\u201cI did well and I knew him because I boxed him twice before,\u201d Sachin said. \u201cIn the next bout I will do my best and I will win gold for myself. It was an amazing, amazing, bout.\u201d<\/p>\n
He will face England’s William Hewitt for a place in the quarter-finals.<\/p>\n
Scottish boxer Nicholas Devlin cruised into the Round of 16 in the Men\u2019s 60kg tournament, defeating Finbar O\u2019Sullivan of New Zealand to open up the morning session. He’ll next face Ebenezer Ankrah of Ghana.<\/p>\n

Ending session three, Canadian Joshua Ofori delivered a first-round referee\u2019s stoppage in the Men\u2019s 80kg, knocking down Sithija Sudamma (SRI) twice in little more than 90 seconds.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Injury blow for home favourite<\/p>\n
In the Men\u2019s 80kg bouts, Australia\u2019s Paul Trainor was declared the winner in the final contest of the night, after the referee determined home favourite Alan Perrie could not continue due to injury.<\/p>\n
Perrie had led 4-1 on the judges\u2019 scorecards after the first round, but the official ruled Perrie\u2019s injuries too severe to continue during the second round. The Scot was visibly upset as he left the ring.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou don’t want a fight to end early, but it’s the referee’s decision and he had a cut and it was getting worse,\u201d Trainor said. \u201cI understand (his reaction) because it\u2019s months of sacrifice.\u201d<\/p>\n
Round of 16 bouts begin tomorrow, 26 July.<\/p>\n
