People go into it with dread because they know what can come with it: wasting time on apps, being ghosted, being judged, putting effort in to get to know someone only for it not to work out. And on and on. The reason people do it, knowing full well it could lead to time wasted and hurt feelings, is that they figure that it’s better than being alone. Deciding which means more to you, protecting yourself or putting effort into finding love, is your current task. It is absolutely possible to find love and acceptance at your (or any) age; you just have to want to do it enough to endure the process.

It is understandable that you are fixated on your way of getting off as you attribute it to the collapse of your marriage. It’s very common, which is to say that using condoms for oral is uncommon. It probably has something to do with condoms being used for birth control, which made them necessary for vaginal but not oral. HIV/AIDS may have only cemented the perceived necessity of condoms down below but not up high—it is widely accepted that oral sex has a much lower risk of HIV transmission than anal or vaginal. The risk is not zero, but HIV is not transmitted via saliva and the virus would need to find a way to the bloodstream, like an open sore. HIV was long regarded as THE BIG ONE to avoid at all costs with good reason: Without treatment, it can be a death sentence. Before 1996, the antiretroviral therapy that has saved the lives of many was not available. The so-called condom code was widely advocated.

This Content is Available for Slate Plus members only

I’m OK With My Husband’s Cross-Dressing Fantasy. Experts are confident that HIV is less likely to be transmitted via oral, but even a 2008 metastudy pointed out several difficulties of attaining hard data here. A huge factor is the dearth of people indicating that oral sex is their lone risk behavior. If more than one sex act is performed, singling out one as the event that caused transmission is often impossible. This is not just true for HIV but also for the bacterial STIs you mentioned as well as other viruses like herpes and HPV. With that said, data has indicated that herpes simplex 2 “doesn’t take very well to the oral cavity,” according to an expert that I interviewed for a previous column.

The authors of one study wrote: “While the youth consider oral sex much ‘safer’ than vaginal sex, this is a perilous fallacy.” Exact levels of risk may be impossible to ascertain, but what we do know is that many bacterial infections are commonly spread through oral contact, as well as vaginal/anal. There may be another factor influencing behavior here: Latex and the various other materials that condoms are made out of are generally considered unpalatable. People generally don’t want to suck on rubber. Given what we do know about transmission (and the possibility of pregnancy), I don’t know that it’s a folly to require condoms for vaginal and not oral as a method of harm reduction, but assuming that unprotected oral comes with no risk would be a huge folly.

—Rich

More Advice From Slate

Recently, after a funeral, me and two of my guy friends ended up having an unexpected threesome.
