{"id":82789,"date":"2025-08-20T04:03:06","date_gmt":"2025-08-20T04:03:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/82789\/"},"modified":"2025-08-20T04:03:06","modified_gmt":"2025-08-20T04:03:06","slug":"canadian-armed-forces-investigating-nazi-salute-video-five-soldiers-suspended","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/82789\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadian Armed Forces investigating Nazi salute video, five soldiers suspended"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/canadian-armed-forces\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/canadian-armed-forces\/\">Canadian Armed Forces<\/a> is investigating an incident of alleged hateful conduct after a video surfaced of people allegedly performing the Nazi salute. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Lieutenant-General Michael Wright, commander of the army, said in a statement Tuesday that he became aware of a video on Aug. 6 containing \u201chateful conduct involving members of the Canadian Army.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Lt.-Gen. Wright said the video was referred to military police within hours of it being shared, and five people were later identified as serving members.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Those soldiers have been suspended from military duties, he said, and an internal investigation is under way to determine the breadth and scope of the incident. Once the facts are confirmed, all appropriate action will be taken, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The video was shared by a member of the public, according to Lt.-Gen. Wright said he is aware that the events happened in 2023, and the members remain subject to administrative and disciplinary action \u201cthat may lead to their release\u201c from the Canadian Armed Forces.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">He added he is \u201cdeeply disturbed and profoundly disappointed\u201d with the video\u2019s content, calling it \u201ccompletely unacceptable\u201d and saying action will be taken swiftly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Hateful conduct and extremism have \u201cno place\u201d in the Canadian Army, he said, adding that it hurts recruitment and credibility, as well as erodes public trust.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cCanadian Army members who jeopardize that trust and participate in hateful conduct will face the consequences of their actions,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The Department of Defence statement did not provide further details, including if the accused soldiers were regular forces or part of the reserves.
