2026 hasn\u2019t been easy for fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender.\u00a0What started off as a leak<\/a> of Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender<\/a>, the first of three animated movies for the franchise, became a bigger web of messiness that\u2019s doesn\u2019t seem to be ending anytime soon.<\/p>\n

This weekend\u2019s San Diego Comic-Con featured a panel for the\u00a0Avatar\u00a0franchise that included a trailer and release date for the upcoming\u00a0Avatar: Seven Havens<\/a>\u00a0and a look into Avatar Aang\u2018s production. During the latter portion, the team showed off concept art of the main villain Tagah, with one section focused on his face shape. In a photo taken by an attendee since shared on social media<\/a>, text in a section on \u201cface shape exploration\u201d begins with, \u201cAccording to ChatGPT.\u201d Fans online started questioning whether the technology was used in the making of the film, or if it at least played a hand in researching how to design some of its characters.<\/p>\n

A swift backlash soon followed against\u00a0Avatar Aang,\u00a0but then things got complicated. Some folks online did some digging for further context<\/a> and learned that not only was the material in question from a presentation slide about Avatar Aang\u2018s upcoming art book<\/a>, the person who wrote the book wasn\u2019t involved with the film\u2019s production. Ramin Zahed, who\u2019s previously written art books for Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man\u00a0and\u00a0Dog Man,\u00a0isn\u2019t credited on the film\u2019s production on IMDB, and art books are often outsourced to people uninvolved with a project\u2019s development.<\/p>\n

Kat Tsai<\/a>, a visual development artist who worked on the film, wrote on Bluesky that there was \u201cabsolutely no AI whatsoever in the art \/ design process!\u201d In a separate post<\/a>, she said she had \u201cno clue why it was on that slide or who put it there, and every member of the crew I worked with is 100% against AI. Every aspect of the animation is handcrafted by real artists.\u201d<\/p>\n

At time of writing, Avatar Studios and Flying Bark have yet to issue a statement on these allegations. io9 has reached out to Abrams Books and the two studios for comment. (We\u2019ll provide an update if we receive a response.) For now, Avatar\u00a0fans are left conflicted as Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender plays in theaters<\/a> and on Paramount+, while\u00a0Avatar: Seven Havens\u00a0will hit the platform on October 9.<\/p>\n
