IQ tests were built to catch an important but narrow thing: reasoning you can time with a clock and grade against a right answer. They were never built to catch the other kind of intelligence \u2014 the read on a room before anyone\u2019s spoken, the decision that arrives whole with no visible math behind it. <\/p>\n
I put together The Intuition Test<\/a> around exactly that blind spot. It doesn\u2019t neceesarily ask whether someone is intuitive. It asks what shape their intuition takes, and how much they\u2019ve learned to trust it. The answer says surprisingly little about how smart a person is in the usual sense, and a great deal about the specific, idiosyncratic kind of mind<\/a> they happen to have.<\/p>\n Researchers studying this fast channel describe it as pattern recognition running well below conscious awarenest. Most recently, a 2024 review<\/a> published in OTJR: Occupation, Participation and Health examined how it functions in skilled clinical practice. <\/p>\n In other words, it\u2019s years of accumulated experience compressed into an impression that surfaces before deliberate reasoning even starts. It runs constantly, in parallel with slower, effortful thinking, and it isn\u2019t a lesser version of reasoning. It\u2019s a different tool entirely, built for situations too fast or too complex for step-by-step analysis to keep up with.<\/p>\n Not One Signal, But Several Signals Of Intelligence<\/p>\n What makes intuition hard to pin down is that it doesn\u2019t speak in one voice. It shows up through at least a few distinct channels, and which one a person relies on tends to be as individual as handwriting.<\/p>\n For some people, it\u2019s almost entirely physical. A tightening in the chest, an unplaceable ease in the shoulders, a stomach that knows before the mind does. This is the body-based channel neuroscientist Antonio Damasio first described, in patients with damage to a brain region tied to bodily feeling: their logic stayed intact, but they\u2019d lost access to these bodily previews. A 2025 meta-analysis<\/a> published in Neuropsychology Review confirms the broader pattern holds up at scale. That is, real-world decision-making falls apart after brain injury even when general intellect is untouched, despite nothing being wrong with the reasoning itself. The body, it turns out, for a lot of people, also does the thinking<\/a>.<\/p>\n For others, there\u2019s no physical sensation at all \u2014 just an instant, wordless verdict about a person or a situation. This looks like a different channel entirely, closer to what researchers call thin-slicing. A 2024 study<\/a> on classroom-observation ratings, published in Frontline Learning Research, opened up how these snap impressions actually form and found they arrive almost instantly, with no conscious awareness of which cues were used, and then tend to stay fixed even when someone is given much more time to look. <\/p>\n Which is why some people are remarkably intuitive about others while feeling almost nothing when it comes to their own choices, and vice versa.<\/p>\n Timing splits people further still. Some act the moment the signal lands, trusting it as final. Others need to let it sit \u2014 a night\u2019s sleep, a walk, a day of not thinking about it on purpose \u2014 before they\u2019re willing to commit. <\/p>\n A preregistered 2025 study<\/a> published in Scientific Reports found exactly this: stepping away and letting the mind wander improved the eventual result on a creative task when people returned to the same unfinished prompt, as though the answer were still being assembled somewhere out of view and rushing it would only get the unfinished version.<\/p>\n There\u2019s a similar split in how people relate to their own certainty. Some can reconstruct a tidy explanation for a gut call after the fact, even if the real driver was the instinct all along. Others can\u2019t explain it and don\u2019t try; the verdict stands on its own, unaccompanied by any narrative, and they\u2019ve made peace with that. <\/p>\n And then there\u2019s a more painful pattern: the person who consistently overrules their first instinct in favor of careful analysis, only to realize afterward that the first read was the correct one. That\u2019s rarely a sign of weak intuition. More often it\u2019s a sign of a genuinely accurate internal system the person hasn\u2019t yet learned to trust.<\/p>\n The Caveat Of This Intelligence<\/p>\n None of this means every hunch deserves obedience. The same fast system that produces an expert\u2019s split-second, reliable call also produces plain bias, and from the inside the two can feel identical. <\/p>\n
