{"id":829569,"date":"2026-07-27T17:06:10","date_gmt":"2026-07-27T17:06:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/829569\/"},"modified":"2026-07-27T17:06:10","modified_gmt":"2026-07-27T17:06:10","slug":"durham-police-chris-kirkpatrick-retiring-after-misconduct-finding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/829569\/","title":{"rendered":"Durham police: Chris Kirkpatrick retiring after misconduct finding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"b-date-custom__date-item\">Updated:\u00a0July 27, 2026 at 12:02PM EDT<\/p>\n<p class=\"b-date-custom__date-item\">Published:\u00a0July 27, 2026 at 10:45AM EDT<\/p>\n<p>A Durham police deputy chief who was suspended earlier this year over his alleged use of a &#8216;racially inappropriate term&#8217; has decided to retire. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A Durham police deputy chief who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/toronto\/local\/durham\/article\/suspended-durham-police-deputy-chief-says-hell-co-operate-with-investigation-over-alleged-use-of-racially-inappropriate-term\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/toronto\/local\/durham\/article\/suspended-durham-police-deputy-chief-says-hell-co-operate-with-investigation-over-alleged-use-of-racially-inappropriate-term\/\">was suspended earlier this year<\/a> over his alleged use of a \u201cracially inappropriate term\u201d during a meeting is not returning to work and has decided to retire from the service after an investigation found his action constituted misconduct.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Durham Regional Police Services Board announced on Monday that it had agreed with Deputy Chief Chris Kirkpatrick to conclude their employment relationship following a review of the investigation conducted by the Law Enforcement Complaints Agency (LECA)<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The board said LECA found Kirkpatrick guilty of misconduct under the Community Safety and Policing Act. LECA is an independent civilian oversight agency that handles public complaints regarding police conduct in Ontario.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Kirkpatrick allegedly used a slur during a February meeting of the Afro-Caribbean Canadian Internal Support Network (ACC-ISN). The network provides a \u201csupportive and inclusive space\u201d for Afro-Caribbean Canadian sworn and civilian members of the service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Days after the meeting, DRPS Chief Peter Moreira <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/toronto\/local\/durham\/article\/durham-police-deputy-chief-suspended-after-allegedly-using-offensive-language-during-meeting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/toronto\/local\/durham\/article\/durham-police-deputy-chief-suspended-after-allegedly-using-offensive-language-during-meeting\/\">announced that Kirkpatrick was suspended with pay<\/a> while a third-party investigation was conducted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cAs the civilian governing body of the DRPS, the Board takes seriously its responsibility to uphold the public\u2019s trust in policing. Ensuring that members of the leadership team are held to the highest standards of conduct is central to that responsibility,\u201d the board said in Monday\u2019s statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThe Board remains deeply committed to fostering an inclusive workplace and culture, and to ensuring that the DRPS reflects and respects the diverse communities it serves.
