CALGARY, Alta. – Alexis Rouleau didn’t arrive at the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship by following a conventional path.

Before emerging as one of Canada’s top junior golfers and earning a spot on Team Canada’s NextGen squad, the Montreal native spent eight years competing in high-level gymnastics. The sport helped develop the balance, discipline and athleticism that continue to serve him today, although injuries eventually led him in a different direction.

After stepping away from gymnastics, Rouleau discovered golf and quickly embraced the challenges that came with it.

“I fell in love with the sport right away. I like the challenges golf presents. It takes a lot of concentration and technique,” he told Hebdo Rive Nord last year.

Now, at just 17 years old, Rouleau arrives at the 121st Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship, presented by BDO, as one of the rising names in Canadian amateur golf. The field in Calgary features 264 players from 10 countries, including 12 members of Team Canada.

He has earned his place among them.

Earlier this month, Rouleau captured the Golf Québec Junior Championship at Club de golf Lac-Saint-Jean, finishing at 15-under-par. The victory added to an impressive season that already included wins at the NextGen Ontario Championship and the Will Lowery Junior Championship, as well as a fifth-place finish at the Toyota Junior Golf World Cup. Those results have helped him climb to No. 310 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking.

Behind those results is a player who believes his biggest improvements have been between the ears.

Asked how he has evolved during his first year with Team Canada, Rouleau first pointed to his mindset.

“I think I’ve changed as a person, especially in relation to my attitude and the decisions I make on the golf course,” he said.

Through Team Canada camps and ongoing work with coaches, Rouleau has learned to see the game differently.

“It’s really about how you manage the golf course and the decisions you make,” he said. “After every round, we would have meetings and look at what we needed to improve.”

That commitment to learning is one of the qualities that immediately stood out to Team Canada coach Matt Wilson.

“He’s been nothing short of spectacular,” Wilson said. “He’s got a thirst for learning that cannot be quenched.”

Wilson believes that Rouleau’s willingness to absorb information, ask questions and apply what he learns has accelerated his progress in the national program. Just as important, he says, is the athletic foundation built during those years in gymnastics.

“There’s a huge difference between hitting a drive on a pretty tight hole and doing a very complex move in gymnastics where there’s real harm available to you,” Wilson said. “He can hit a shot very, very freely.”

The benefits of Team Canada extended beyond coaching.

Earlier this year, Rouleau represented Canada at the Toyota Junior Golf World Cup in Japan, an experience he describes as one of the highlights of his young career.

“It was really an incredible experience,” he said. “Maybe it’s something I won’t experience again in my life, so I really enjoyed every moment.”

Playing in a team format also offered a welcome change from golf’s solo nature.

“The fact that it was a team tournament was really fun. We encouraged each other all week.”

The experience reinforced what he hopes to achieve in the years ahead.

As Quebec continues to produce more players capable of competing nationally and internationally, Rouleau sees examples he wants to follow.

“That inspires me a lot because I want to get to that level,” he said.

This week offers another opportunity to take a step in that direction.

The Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship remains one of the most prestigious events in the amateur game, with the winner earning exemptions into the 2027 RBC Canadian Open and several USGA championships and qualifiers.

For Rouleau, however, the objective is simple.

After a busy summer that included international competition and some inevitable challenges, he is focused less on expectations than execution.

“I just want to go play golf and have fun,” he said. “One thing at a time, then we’ll see what happens.”

For a player whose rise has been defined by patience, curiosity and a willingness to embrace every opportunity, it is a fitting approach. This week in Calgary, Alexis Rouleau will challenge the nation’s top amateur golfers, yet just another step in his journey.
