At least if you ask recently hired head coach Mike LaFleur, per <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/OmarDRuiz\/status\/2080411708515102924\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">NFL Network<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"false\" data-v-273d04fe=\"\">With contract negotiations between Jacoby Brissett and the Cardinals, LaFleur was asked on Thursday whether Brissett remains the team\u2019s starter for the upcoming season. LaFleur brushed off the question, responding simply that it was &#8220;practice 1 on July 23rd.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"false\" data-v-273d04fe=\"\">The Cardinals selected Miami quarterback Carson Beck in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft, originally expecting him to serve as Brissett\u2019s backup. However, LaFleur\u2019s refusal to name a starter suggests a genuine competition could be brewing in Arizona.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"false\" data-v-273d04fe=\"\">Brissett is coming off a career year, having stepped in for an injured Kyler Murray last season. Between all the workouts and going through a full season and an offseason and all that, it means something to the guys. The 10-year veteran and Super Bowl winner had options within the NFL as a veteran free agent QB, but has chosen to move onto television instead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"false\" data-v-273d04fe=\"\">According to Wilson himself back in May, by way of the <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/nypostsports\/status\/2052076689895633181\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">New York Post<\/a>, he was deciding between joining the New York Jets to serve as Geno Smith&#8217;s backup, or moving into an analyst role. Bailey Zappe and Brady Cook have a combined 13 starts in the league, while the fourth QB on the roster is 2026 draft selection, Cade Klubnik, whom the Jets picked in the fourth round.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"false\" data-v-273d04fe=\"\">Wilson began the 2025 season as the New York Giants&#8217; quarterback but was benched in favor of 2025 first-round pick, Jaxson Dart, after an 0-3 start. Smith was already Wilson&#8217;s teammate before on the Seattle Seahawks, and per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/story\/_\/id\/48695339\/russell-wilson-says-weighing-offer-jets-network-tv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">ESPN<\/a> recommended bringing Wilson on board.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"false\" data-v-273d04fe=\"\">The 37-year-old Wilson \u2013 who will be 38 in November \u2013 appeared in six games (three starts) in 2025, throwing for 831 yards with three touchdowns and interceptions each. Williams wrote last season after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/stories\/nfl\/benched-giants-russell-wilsons-last-stand-hes-backup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the veteran QB was benched<\/a> in favor of Dart, &#8220;Wilson&#8217;s arguably one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in league history, ranking 15th all-time in passing yards, 12th in passing touchdowns and fifth in passer rating.
