\n\tThe first trailer for Gina Prince Bythewood\u2019s Children of Blood and Bone<\/a> film adaptation has arrived.<\/p>\n

\n\tBrought to life from a script by Bythewood and Tomi Adeyemi, the film is based on Adeyemi\u2019s novel of the same name.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe clip opens on Lashana Lynch as Jumoke, mother of Thuso Mbedy\u2019s Z\u00e9lie Adebola, kneeling before a younger version of her daughter in desert sand.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cOr\u00efsha was once a land where magic flowed through our people,\u201d Lynch\u2019s voice tells Zelie. \u201cYou were born with a gift greater than you know, but those who feared our power took it away from us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSet in the epic fantasy world\u00a0of\u00a0Or\u00efsha, the story sees a young woman (Mbedu) embark on a quest to reclaim the magic that was violently stolen from her people. She\u00a0and\u00a0her brother ally with the daughter\u00a0and son\u00a0of\u00a0the king (Chiwetel Ejiofor) to fight back against his brutal rule. Set to Beyonce\u2019s \u201cEnergy (feat. Beam),\u201d the trailer teases action in the form of battles via weapons and magical forces and conflict between those who wield magic and those who want a world without its existence.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMagic is a festering disease,\u201d Ejiofor\u2019s King Saran asserts. \u201cPurge it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tKing Saran\u2019s son, Inan (Damson Idris<\/a>), has a large mantle to carry in a world where his father did away with magic, and he questions whether he wants to follow in his father\u2019s footsteps in how he dons the crown.<\/p>\n

\n\tVarious Maji clans such as the Omi Clan, or Maji of Water, and Ik\u00fa Clan, or Maji of Life and Death, practice different forms of magic, with Omi Tiders wielding waves and Ik\u00f9 Reapers, like Zelie\u2019s mother, summoning souls.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI know you miss her,\u201d Viola Davis\u2019 Mama Agba tells Zelie about her mother. \u201cYour powers may be gone, but that does not change who you are. For years I have trained you because I believe you are the one. You can bring magic back.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Omi Clan\u2019s shoreside village can be glimpsed, as can a vivid pink river. At one point, Mbedu\u2019s main character becomes embedded with purple crystal-like objects that seem to enhance or unlock her powers.<\/p>\n

\n\tChildren of Blood and Bone also stars Amandla Stenberg as Amari and Tosin Cole as Tzain while featuring Cynthia Erivo as Kaea, Zackary Momoh, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Regina King as Queen Nehanda and Idris Elba plays Lekan.<\/p>\n
