Tadej Poga\u010dar<\/a>\u2019s UAE Team Emirates-XRG team took home \u20ac832,750 (\u00a3712,500 \/ $945,900) in prize money from this year\u2019s Tour de France<\/a>, more than a third of the entire pot<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A total of \u20ac2,300,600 (\u00a31.97m \/ $2.61m) was distributed among the 23 teams at the race, and awarded based on performance. UAE Team Emirates-XRG earned the most, while Picnic PostNL<\/a> received the least \u2013 \u20ac12,770.<\/p>\n

A large part of UAE\u2019s winnings came from Poga\u010dar<\/a>\u2019s overall victory in the general classification, which earned the team \u20ac500,000 (\u00a3427,800 \/ $567,900).<\/p>\n

The team also received \u20ac100,000 for Isaac del Toro<\/a>\u2019s third place, \u20ac20,000 for his victory in the young rider\u2019s classification, and \u20ac11,000 for each of their six stage wins \u2013 five for Poga\u010dar and one for Del Toro.<\/p>\n

As such, UAE ended up hauling 36% of the total prize pot at the race. The next best team in the prize money ranking was Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe<\/a>, who took home \u20ac288,160, thanks mostly to the \u20ac200,000 Remco Evenepoel<\/a> claimed for finishing second overall.<\/p>\n

How is the prize money allocated?<\/p>\n

Prize money at the Tour de France<\/a> is weighted heavily on each rider\u2019s placing in the overall standings. The yellow jersey winner receives \u20ac500,000 \u2013 almost a quarter of the entire prize pot \u2013 while second place earns \u20ac200,000, third earns \u20ac100,000, and the winnings diminish down to \u20ac3,800 for 10th place.<\/p>\n

There are also large sums on offer for the winners of each of the other three jerseys \u2013 green, polka dot and white. Mads Pedersen<\/a> (Lidl-Trek<\/a>) took home the green jersey as the winner of the points classification, and netted \u20ac25,000. The same sum went to Richard Carapaz<\/a> (EF Education-EasyPost) as the King of the Mountains.<\/p>\n

Carapaz also received \u20ac20,000 for winning the overall combativity award. Del Toro\u2019s white jersey victory, as the best young rider, yielded the same amount.<\/p>\n

Likewise, the team classification, awarded to the team with the best cumulative time of its top three-riders in the GC, carries a significant pay-out. Lidl-Trek earned \u20ac50,000 for winning the competition, while UAE Team Emirates-XRG received \u20ac30,000 for second, and Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe \u20ac20,000 for third.<\/p>\n

Prize money is also awarded after every stage based on each rider\u2019s placing: \u20ac11,000 for the stage winner, \u20ac5,500 for second place, \u20ac2,800 for third, all the way down to \u20ac300 for 20th.<\/p>\n

Riders also have the chance to win between \u20ac200 and \u20ac5,000 for being first over certain climbs. Carapaz, for example, was awarded \u20ac5,000 for winning the Souvenir Henri Desgrange, the award given to the rider who summits the highest peak of the race, in this case the Col du Galibier on stage 20, which topped out at 2,642m.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Poga\u010dar earned the same sum for winning the Souvenir Jacques Goddet<\/a>, having been the first rider over the top of the Col du Tourmalet on stage six.<\/p>\n
