From scouring Google Street View to clambering over mountains and calculating time gaps, Harry Talbot gives a glimpse into the life and work of a Tour de France photographer.<\/p>\n

Harry Talbot is a professional photographer and is just back home in Girona after another Tour de France. Last year, he wrote us an essay<\/a> about his experience of shooting on the Colle delle Finestre at the Giro d’Italia, and the impact the mighty mountain had on him personally. Now he’s back with his account of being a photographer at the Tour, a job that starts a long time before the race begins.<\/p>\n

It feels like years ago I was spending my afternoons at home endlessly moving the marker along Google Street View, looking at kilometres of French D roads in the hope of finding locations worth shooting on all 21 stages of this Tour de France.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sitting on the train home, I\u2019m taking the time to put together a gallery of my favourite photos from this years race, shooting mountains, French countryside and traditional villages across the three weeks. Here\u2019s a handful of my photographs and why I like them. Please bear with whatever these words turn into \u2013 all of me would rather be asleep right now.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s do this in chronological order then \u2013 makes sense. The team time trial in Barcelona, the much-anticipated Grand Depart. I shot down the bottom of the Montju\u00efc climb, near the National Art Museum. Sunlight streamed in, harshly as it always does in Spain. I didn\u2019t love it here but it gave me freedom, the space to move around, and in a time trial, that\u2019s all you could ever ask for. I\u2019m not sitting in one spot on stage 1.<\/p>\n

For a change, I think my favourite photo was of the podium ceremony, seeing the team celebrate together. We photographers do love emotion and it was there in spades on the first podium.<\/p>\n

You couldn\u2019t get enough of it the next day. After riding up the Costa Brava, and surviving the orange smoke flares on the\u00a0second lap of the Montju\u00efc circuits, Isaac del Toro and Tadej Pogacar crossed the line together in celebration. I\u2019ve never photographed a happier Tadej \u2013 it was nice to see the joy his teammate winning brought him. It feels like a lifetime ago now, but watching through the viewfinder as he lifted him into the air, hand raised against the sky, these are the photos we could only ever wish for.<\/p>\n
