I’m actually still shocked,” was Verstappen’s reaction on Sunday.

It was explained by what’s best described as a classic, opportunistic Verstappen masterclass: an elbows-out start, followed by a brilliant move down the inside of his old title rival Lewis Hamilton at Turn 1, earned him a podium in a car few others could do so in.

But as soon as Verstappen hopped out of his Red Bull in parc ferme, he immediately noticed evidence of an issue that irritated him all weekend.

“When I jumped out of the car, there was damage on the car for whatever reason,” Verstappen said.

That issue was that his RB22 had been falling apart while he was driving it, with it highly susceptible to the Hungaroring’s harsh kerbs, rough track surface and any touches with the gravel.

It had led to an explosive outburst during qualifying, with Verstappen telling his race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase over team radio: “Mate, the car is just completely broken aerodynamically, it’s just getting worse and worse.

“What a joke. What a joke, honestly. What a s**t weekend.”

Verstappen subsequently spun at the final corner on his last attempt in Q3, though even if he had avoided that, bettering his time would have been difficult.

This didn’t have anything to do with the faulty flip-over wing that contributed to crashes at the Red Bull Ring and Silverstone, as that’s been modified and fixed. But Verstappen did say the rear-end became “non-existent” before his spin at the final corner and had hopes it would be fixed for Sunday’s grand prix.

A damaged floor vane extension piece was changed under parc ferme with FIA approval, but the issues didn’t go away as Verstappen endured what he described as “one of the hardest races of the year”.

Worst of all? It’s not actually a new issue and instead has become a big unresolved problem of the 2026 Red Bull.

A ‘very sensitive’ car

The Red Bull has never been the outright quickest car in 2026 but, after an early-season spell where it was vulnerable to the midfield, it’s bounced around being the second-, third- and fourth-fastest car.

Verstappen could have won the Austrian GP, where Red Bull debuted an extensive upgrade, but it hasn’t been a victory contender since then because its car is very susceptible to being knocked out of the right operating window.

Team principal Laurent Mekies accepted the RB22 has been “very sensitive” to a number of small factors since the start of the season, which is often putting the car “on the edge”.

As well as picking up minor damage on the kerbs or gravel, the car can struggle with a particularly nasty gust of wind, losing laptime and driver confidence. It’s an area that Mekies admitted Red Bull has to improve on.

But he also said in an interview with De Telegraaf, of Red Bull cars having a narrow working window: “I don’t want to say that it is a trademark of Red Bull, but you have a point that this is not unique.

“But we also have to be honest; Red Bull Racing has won many championships with this type of car as well. It just stands out more now because we are the hunter and not the prey.”

Mekies also revealed he thinks Verstappen’s sensitivity and capacity means he identifies car problems that others wouldn’t – and that other teams’ data wouldn’t pick up either, intimating that maybe Red Bull doesn’t have any bigger car degradation problems than rivals; it just has a driver more attuned to spotting them.

“It is a fact that Max senses things we cannot measure with our current data analysis and sensors in the car. I will be very honest about that,” Mekies told De Telegraaf.

“That is the result of his extraordinary sensitivity in the car and the technical level he possesses. I do not see that as a worrying factor, but rather as a great strength.

“To give an example: Max already felt at the beginning of this year that there was a problem with the steering rack, and we couldn’t see it. But thanks to him, we were able to solve it. As a team, we have only benefited from that.”

Max Verstappen is heading into the Formula 1 summer break frustrated by an unusual problem of “car degradation”…

[441
49,48,578,576,577,82
post-833248","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-formula-1","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-f1","tag-formula-1","tag-formula1","tag-sports
["GET
