VANCOUVER, BC\u00a0\u2013 Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced on Tuesday that the club has transferred midfielder Sebastian Berhalter to English Championship side Middlesbrough FC. As part of the agreement, Whitecaps FC will retain a sell-on percentage in the event of a future transfer.<\/p>\n
\u201cThrough his development at our club and his consistent performances, it was only natural that Sebastian attracted interest from several clubs,\u201d said Axel Schuster, Whitecaps FC sporting director. \u201cWe have been in open and ongoing discussions with Sebastian and his representatives about his future. It was always clear that if the right opportunity to move to Europe presented itself, he wanted the chance to pursue that challenge. At the same time, we shared the understanding that if the timing\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0right, we would continue working together on his long-term future with our club.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Berhalter,\u00a025, first joined Whitecaps FC\u00a0as a 20-year-old in February 2022 from Columbus Crew for $50,000 in 2022 General Allocation Money (GAM),\u00a0and up to $50,000 in conditional GAM. The American midfielder went on\u00a0to make 112\u00a0starts in 167 appearances\u00a0across all competitions\u00a0(fifth most\u00a0in the club\u2019s\u00a0MLS era),\u00a0recording\u00a020 goals and 34 assists (second most\u00a0in the\u00a0club’s\u00a0MLS era, ninth all-time).\u00a0During\u00a0this time, Berhalter\u00a0helped Whitecaps FC win four consecutive\u00a0TELUS Canadian Championship (2022, 2023, 2024, 2025),\u00a0reach the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup Final,\u00a0and\u00a0capture\u00a0the 2025 MLS Western Conference Championship.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cSebastian joined us at a pivotal stage of his young career, and through his hard work and dedication, he earned every opportunity with both club and country,” added Schuster. \u201cWe are incredibly proud of what he has accomplished and the role he has played in our success. Individually, Berhalter was\u00a0named to the\u00a02025 Concacaf Champions Cup Best XI\u00a0and\u00a02025 MLS Best XI,\u00a0was\u00a0selected to the\u00a0MLS All-Star\u00a0team in\u00a02025\u00a0and\u00a02026, and earned the club\u2019s\u00a02024 Humanitarian of the Year, 2024 Jock MacDonald Unsung Hero, and 2025 Whitecaps FC Player of the Year.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Through his rise at club level, Berhalter was first called up to the United States men\u2019s national team ahead of last summer\u2019s Concacaf Gold Cup, registering two assists and helping his country reach the final. He would later score his first international goal in a 5-1 win over Uruguay in the November window, before earning a spot on the host nation United States roster at this summer\u2019s\u00a0FIFA World Cup 2026\u2122.\u00a0He\u00a0made\u00a0his mark at the tournament, becoming the first ever MLS player to record\u00a0both\u00a0a goal and\u00a0an\u00a0assist in a World Cup match, doing so against\u00a0T\u00fcrkiye\u00a0in\u00a0the United States group stage match.\u00a0<\/p>\n
