Acclaimed actor Gary Oldman<\/a> says it\u2019s no coincidence that the \u201cworld\u2019s gone to shit\u201d since his longtime friend, David Bowie<\/a>, died in January 2016.<\/p>\n

Oldman opened up about his connection with Bowie during a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>, where he emphasized the depths of their friendship: \u201cWe laughed a lot \u2014 a lot. He was very, very, very funny, David,\u201d the Oscar-winning actor revealed. \u201cAnd we sort of had similar kinds of backgrounds, grew up in similar neighborhoods\u201d (Bowie and Oldman both grew up in South London).<\/p>\n

The actor went on to add that Bowie was \u201cinspiring\u201d and \u201ca great innovator and not afraid to try things,\u201d among his many positive attributes. He also cited Bowie\u2019s constant innovation as an inspiration in his own work.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t you feel that since he died, the world\u2019s gone to shit? It was like he was cosmic glue or something,\u201d he mused regarding Bowie\u2019s passing. \u201cWhen he died, everything fell apart. So, yeah, I miss him.\u201d (Editor\u2019s note: ten days after Bowie\u2019s death, Donald Trump was sworn in for his first term as president.)<\/p>\n

The pair\u2019s friendship was well documented, with Oldman delivering a heartfelt tribute while accepting Bowie\u2019s posthumous Icon Award during the 2016 BRIT Awards shortly after the singer\u2019s death. Watch the acceptance speech below.<\/p>\n

In 2017, Oldman curated a special tribute<\/a> to what would have been the Starman\u2019s 70th birthday. Held at the Brixton Academy in London, Oldman performed a pair of Bowie classics (\u201cDead Man Walking\u201d and \u201cThe Man Who Sold the World\u201d) at the show, which also saw appearances from artists including Simon Le Bon of Duran Duran, Def Leppard\u2019s Joe Elliott, members of Spandau Ballet, La Roux, and more.<\/p>\n

Oldman performed Tin Machine\u2019s \u201cI Can Read\u201d at a special celebration<\/a> for Bowie\u2019s 74th birthday in 2021.<\/p>\n

The two also collaborated artistically over the years, with both starring in the 1996 biopic, Basquiat.
