Instead of casting a spell of magical nostalgia, Tim Hortons’ upcoming Harry Potter collaboration has conjured up controversy.<\/p>\n

The Canadian coffee chain is bringing Hogwarts-inspired menu items like doughnuts and timbits, limited-edition packaging and merchandise to restaurants this August to mark the 25th anniversary of the first Harry Potter movie, according to a release shared Monday.<\/a><\/p>\n

But the move has sparked a wave of backlash online, with some customers and LGBTQ+ advocates criticizing the partnership over author J.K. Rowling’s views on transgender rights.<\/p>\n

The coffee chain says the collaboration isn’t about politics, but about celebrating one of the world’s most recognizable stories.<\/p>\n

“This collaboration with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products is a celebration of an iconic story, a way for Tims to sprinkle some magic into guests’ daily routines, and to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the first Harry Potter movie with fans,” a spokesperson said in an an emailed statement to Yahoo News Canada.<\/p>\n

But not everyone is viewing the collaboration as a celebration.<\/p>\n

The announcement quickly drew criticism on social media, where some customers said they would boycott the coffee chain over the partnership, arguing they cannot separate the Harry Potter franchise from author J.K. Rowling’s views on transgender rights.<\/p>\n

The backlash stems from years of controversy brewing over the author, who has been accused of using her platform to promote views they say are harmful to transgender and non-binary communities<\/a>. Rowling has said she supports transgender rights while defending her views on sex and gender, which have sparked years of debate.<\/p>\n

“Trans women aren’t women, and if that hurts your feelings, be grateful you live in a society where you are just as free to espouse gender ideology as I am to speak the truth,” Rowling recently said in a post on X.<\/a><\/p>\n

The controversy has also extended to some of the franchise’s biggest stars.<\/p>\n

Harry Potter actors Daniel Radcliffe<\/a> and Emma Watson<\/a> have publicly expressed support for transgender rights and disagreed with Rowling’s comments on sex and gender. Rowling in turn responded by defending her views and criticizing the actors’ positions, saying she does not forgive their stance.<\/p>\n

LGBTQ+ advocacy group says the magic comes with a complicated history<\/p>\n

Egale Canada,<\/a> one of Canada’s largest LGBTQ+ advocacy organizations, says many fans are still deeply connected to the books and films, but that connection has become complicated by years of controversy surrounding author J.K. Rowling.<\/p>\n

In a statement Tuesday,<\/a> the organization said the Tim Hortons’ “Back to Hogwarts” campaign contributes to the continued visibility and commercial success of a franchise tied to Rowling, whose comments on sex and gender have drawn criticism from LGBTQ+ advocates.<\/p>\n

“As anti-2SLGBTQI hate continues to rise in Canada, especially for trans and gender diverse communities, campaigns that celebrate the Harry Potter brand can be deeply disappointing, infuriating, and saddening,” Egale said.<\/p>\n

The organization urged companies to look beyond the sparkle and nostalgia of major entertainment brands and consider how partnerships may affect communities facing discrimination and hostility.<\/p>\n

The magic quickly turned into a debate online.<\/p>\n

While some Harry Potter fans rushed to celebrate Tim Hortons’ upcoming collaboration, others said the promotion crossed a line, arguing that the franchise cannot be separated from author J.K. Rowling’s controversial comments on transgender rights.<\/p>\n

Some customers said the promotion was enough to make them reconsider supporting the coffee chain, with one commenter writing, “And like magic you’re going to lose me as a customer.”<\/p>\n

Others called the campaign a “terrible decision,” with some saying they would boycott Tim Hortons over concerns about the Harry Potter franchise’s association with J.K. Rowling.<\/p>\n

One commenter, who identified themselves as a Tim Hortons employee and transgender, said the campaign felt hurtful and impacted members of the company’s own workforce.<\/p>\n

Not all of the reaction was critical. Some Harry Potter fans welcomed the announcement with excitement, embracing the nostalgia and magical theme behind the collaboration. One commenter wrote, “I solemnly swear I am definitely getting EVERYTHING on the menu \ud83e\ude84.”<\/p>\n

Tim Hortons says the Harry Potter collaboration will launch Aug. 12,<\/a> featuring Hogwarts House-inspired donuts, Golden Snitch Timbits, themed drinks, collectible merchandise and limited-edition packaging.<\/p>\n
