Combined with his previous walks and bike rides across the country, he is now fewer than 500 kilometers from covering the circumference of the Earth.

“It amazes me every day that I’ve gone this far,” Redmond said. “I was told by some doctors when I was a teenager that you’d be crippling up in your 50s.”

Related Stories:

Beating the odds

Redmond’s journey began with a devastating setback.

At 15, he was struck by a car and nearly lost his leg. He spent six weeks in hospital and another year and a half recovering from an open wound that extended to the bone. Doctors warned he could begin losing mobility as early as his 30s.

Instead of accepting that future, Redmond chose a different path.

He has since walked 11,421 kilometers across Canada, biked another 14,632 kilometers, and is now completing a cross-country run he calls the Grand Trifecta.

“Going three times across Canada, I wasn’t out to break a record,” Redmond said. “I was out to beat the odds.”

For Redmond, the Grand Trifecta is about more than athletic achievement.

“The Grand Trifecta of health is a healthy mind, a healthy body, and a healthy spirit,” he said. “If you’ve got those solid and you keep those fit, you’ve got health.”

Encouraging Canadians to keep moving

Redmond hopes his journey inspires Canadians to recognize the connection between physical activity and mental well-being.

“I really want to move people. This is the movement for movement,” he said. “The more we move, the more we move others.”

He says the idea traces back to a phrase he learned as a child.

“I’ll go there and back to help that person.”

That mindset now drives his mission.

“When I think about helping Canadians, I want to go there and back myself,” Redmond said. “And there and back to me is the ends of the earth and back.”

He believes caring for mental and physical health goes hand in hand.

“We do need to move to keep our mental health together,” he said. “And we’ve got to have our mental health together to keep moving.”

Redmond also credits Canada’s health-care system with making his recovery possible.

“I received lots of support from our health-care system,” he said. “It’s valuable in Canada for us to have a strong health-care system. We need to continually invest in it.”

The story behind the “Fellow in Yellow”

Redmond’s nickname comes from the bright yellow clothing he wears to remain highly visible while running along highways, but it also has a deeper meaning.

Before his accident, he dreamed of meeting Canadian icon Rick Hansen during the Man in Motion World Tour.

“Four days prior is when I got struck by the car,” Redmond said. “After my first operation, I looked at my leg and I said, I’m not going home. I’m not ever going to meet Rick.”

Years later, Redmond participated in a relay marking the anniversary of Hansen’s cross-country journey. Inspired by participants wearing yellow jackets, he adopted the colour for his own adventure.

“I said, gee, if I’m going across Canada and back again, I should wear a yellow jacket because that would really stand out along the highways,” Redmond said. “And I said, well, maybe you should wear yellow pants too and call yourself a Fellow in Yellow.”

As he continues east toward Halifax, Redmond hopes Canadians will remember that movement can strengthen not only the body, but also the mind and spirit.

The Fellow in Yellow is expected to arrive at The Forks in the coming days as he reaches the end of the Yellowhead Highway on his cross-country journey.

Those wanting to support Redmond and follow his progress can do so through the Fellow in Yellow Facebook page, where a live tracker is available, or by visiting his website.

Redmond is also raising awareness and support for the A Dollar A Day Foundation, which funds mental health and addiction initiatives through partner organizations across Canada.

Trevor Redmond, better known as the “Fellow in Yellow,” is making his way back to Halifax after reaching…

[4
49,48,44
post-833492","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-canada","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-news
["GET
