Fatima Zahra has become the first female boxer from Pakistan to secure a Commonwealth Games medal, while Scotland’s Caitlin Rainey has achieved the same feat.<\/p>\n
It has been 10 years since Pakistan first entered a women\u2019s team in international boxing competition.<\/p>\n
After a decade of progress, Fatima Zahra on Tuesday ensured her nation\u2019s flag will be flying in Hall 5 at the SEC Centre with a unanimous-decision win over New Zealand’s Jordan Wilson in the Women\u2019s 60kg quarter-finals.\u00a0<\/p>\n
That result means Zahra will take home at least a bronze. For a place in the final, she must defeat Marie-Bathoul Al-Ahmadieh in Friday’s semi-final, after the Canadian fighter defeated Kenya’s Rosemarion Otieno in their last-eight bout.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is our first step,\u201d Zahra said. \u201cWe are hoping for the gold as well, and this medal will mean a lot for Pakistan boxing.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s been a long way. We are developing in the boxing, but it’s the sign that we are going in the right direction.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo most likely with this training, we will improve a lot in the next coming stages as well.\u201d<\/p>\n
Scotland medal secured<\/p>\n
Scottish fighter Caitlin Rainey’s stoppage win against Papua New Guinea’s Flora Loga in the Women\u2019s 65kg means the hosts will also have their first female boxing medal, following the sport’s Commonwealth Games introduction in 2014.<\/p>\n
Rainey’s semi-final opponent will be Kaci Rock from Northern Ireland, who outclassed Niue’s Karen Te Ruki Pasene.<\/p>\n
Another first was denied in the Men\u2019s 55kg tournament after Australia’s Jye Dixon won by referee\u2019s stoppage in the second round against Md Rakib Hossain, who was hoping to become Bangladesh\u2019s first Commonwealth Games medallist in the sport.<\/p>\n
Dixon next meets Amadu Mohammed of Ghana.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Lesotho guaranteed their first Commonwealth Games medal in 20 years, after Pooana Khoahli defeated Ziggy Agathe from Mauritius in their Men\u2019s 65kg bout.<\/p>\n
