You may need an extra day of easy or no riding to recover—or at least, you may need to ease into your workout with a longer warmup and a willingness to pull the plug if you’re still feeling exhausted during your first set.

If you’re feeling refreshed and ready to go, take note of that feeling and bring it with you into your workout.

Do a Daily Check-In

“You’re not going to be at your best every day,” Sutton explains. “You can have a program in place, and then have a terrible night of sleep, or something going on in your life, and that can mean the program needs to change.”

Again, that may mean you need an extra recovery day, or you may simply need to back off on the intervals and not go 100 percent on the first couple. On the flip side, if you do wake up feeling great, that can be a great day to really push the pace on those VO2 max efforts.

Listening to your body and adjusting accordingly is an important part of being able to perform at a high level without overtraining or developing injuries, no matter what’s on the training schedule for the day.

Believe in Yourself—and Your Training Program

Sutton says the most important thing is that the athletes need to believe in themselves.

“The women who took home medals in Paris worked so hard, they had so much drive, and they had so much belief in themselves and in the fact that they had done the work needed to put them in position to win a medal,” Sutton says, and this made a huge difference.

Interestingly, Sutton also thinks that a big part of an athlete’s success is based on how much they believe in their training program. An athlete who doubts that the training they’ve done is going to be right for the task at hand is unlikely to succeed.

Consider the task of competing for the win in an Olympic road race when you’ve been focused on track training and short efforts, as was the case for Faulkner. Rather than see her short efforts as a problem, she planned to use the benefits of those punchy efforts to launch the winning attack—and it paid off.

Molly writes about cycling, nutrition and training with an emphasis on bringing more women into sport.
