The deal is still subject to regulatory approval and other standard closing conditions before it’s finalized.

For anyone outside the rights administration world, it’s worth untangling exactly what’s changing hands here. SOCAN is Canada’s main performing rights organization, with more than a century of history collecting royalties for public performances of music, and it’s also spent close to a decade building out its own reproduction rights business. CMRRA, meanwhile, has specialized in reproduction rights specifically, the licensing that covers things like mechanical royalties, for more than 50 years. SoundExchange, the U.S.-based nonprofit that currently owns CMRRA, has held that agency for close to a decade after acquiring it itself.

Bringing CMRRA under SOCAN’s roof puts Canada’s two major rights functions, performance and reproduction, under a single organization for the first time in a meaningful, structural way. SOCAN’s CEO, Jennifer Brown, framed the move as being about building a more seamless experience for Canadian publishers and songwriters. “We have an opportunity to harness our respective strengths and support long-term growth,” she said.

SoundExchange’s president and CEO, Michael Huppe, described the sale as the natural next step after years of investment in CMRRA’s operations. “We are proud of the progress achieved and believe SOCAN is the right organization to build on that success,” he said, adding that the move allows SoundExchange to stay focused on its core work supporting artists and rights owners globally.

CMRRA’s own president, Paul Shaver, struck a similar note about continuity. “This next chapter with SOCAN represents an exciting opportunity to build on that foundation,” he said, pointing to plans for deeper service to music publishers and self-published songwriters going forward.

Financial terms of the deal haven’t been disclosed. For Canadian songwriters, composers, and publishers, the practical upshot to watch for once the deal closes is whether royalty administration becomes noticeably simpler, since dealing with one organization instead of two for performance and reproduction rights has long been one of the more common friction points in how Canadian creators get paid.

SOCAN and SoundExchange announced today that they’ve entered into a purchase agreement under which SOCAN will acquire the…

[6
49,48,291149,291150,291151,291152,91651,68725,61
post-834178","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-technology","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-cmrra","tag-jennifer-brown","tag-michael-huppe","tag-paul-shaver","tag-socan","tag-soundexchange","tag-technology
["GET
