The\u00a0 city of Calgary is launching a pilot project aimed at enhancing service to blind, Deafblind, and low vision commuters.<\/p>\n

The project, which was developed in part with input from the CNIB Foundation, places 89 tactile and high contrast signs on Route 90 (Bridgeland\/University of Calgary).\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAccessible transit means more than just getting from one place to another \u2014 it\u2019s about ensuring safety, independence, and with confidence for all travelers,\u201d CNIB Advocacy Lead Taylor Bauer stated in a news release.<\/p>\n

Information on the signs such as stop ID and route details are displayed with raised text and braille.<\/p>\n

More changes possibly to come to all routes: city<\/p>\n

The city says public feedback captured through\u00a0a questionnaire<\/a>\u00a0and additional engagement with CNIB will help inform potential future tactile sign rollout on all Calgary bus routes.<\/p>\n

Calgary Transit says it\u2019s begun improving accessibility in and around CTrain stations. Improvements came in 2025 to the Sunnyside Station pedestrian crossings:<\/p>\n

Automatic gate arms\u00a0to help manage pedestrian flow<\/p>\n

Emergency swing gates\u00a0for added protection<\/p>\n

Wider crossing surfaces\u00a0for smoother movement<\/p>\n

Tactile surfaces and wheelchair ramps\u00a0to support accessibility<\/p>\n

Cane-detectable features\u00a0to assist visually impaired pedestrians<\/p>\n

LED indicators and upgraded lighting\u00a0for better visibility<\/p>\n

Modern control systems\u00a0for improved reliability<\/p>\n

Enhanced CCTV coverage\u00a0to support safety<\/p>\n
