{"id":834435,"date":"2026-07-29T20:41:10","date_gmt":"2026-07-29T20:41:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/834435\/"},"modified":"2026-07-29T20:41:10","modified_gmt":"2026-07-29T20:41:10","slug":"6-year-old-girl-dies-after-parents-paid-860k-for-experimental-therapy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/834435\/","title":{"rendered":"6-year-old girl dies after parents paid $860K for experimental therapy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In an effort to treat their daughter\u2019s genetic developmental disorder, parents in China paid respected researchers millions in Chinese yuan, a total of $860,000 USD, for a new treatment that had never been used in humans.<\/p>\n<p>But instead of celebrating advances in her writing and language skills, the family is mourning the loss of their only child.<\/p>\n<p>Her treatment went forward even when experts say success was unlikely, animal studies showed red flags for safety, and doctors downplayed risks \u2014 including of death, which wasn\u2019t ever mentioned explicitly to the family, a new report in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/article\/exclusive-death-girl-chinese-gene-editing-trial-was-never-made-public\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Science<\/a> says.<\/p>\n<p>Zilong Qiu, who led the research for Mei\u2019s treatment, appeared to be obsessed with publishing research in a prestigious journal, hoping hers would be \u201cthe first brain-directed gene-editing therapy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zilong Qiu lead the effort for base editing treatment for Mei.<\/p>\n<p>Months after her death, he got what he wanted: a paper in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-026-10113-6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nature<\/a>, only it doesn\u2019t acknowledge her at all.<\/p>\n<p>The report from Science<a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/article\/exclusive-death-girl-chinese-gene-editing-trial-was-never-made-public\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> <\/a>is making waves in the research world, raising questions about research oversight and capitalizing on desperate families to fund shaky science.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis shouldn\u2019t have gone to trial,\u201d Steven Gray of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, who develops viruses for gene therapy, told Science. He and other experts are calling for a review of all images and data in the Nature paper published earlier this year by Qiu.<\/p>\n<p>Treating Mei with base editing gene therapy<\/p>\n<p>The family asked to remain anonymous, and asked to refer to their daughter as \u201cMei.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mei had a rare mutation on her CHD3 gene, which plays an important role in early development. Kids like her with Snijders Blok-Campeau Syndrome often have intellectual disabilities and impaired speech and language.<\/p>\n<p>Mei\u2019s teachers told her parents that she was struggling to keep up with other students in writing and language development, but she still had a mild case.<\/p>\n<p>Given that her disorder was not going to get worse over time and was not fatal, it raises questions about why such drastic action was recommended by the experts her parents consulted.<\/p>\n<p>Qiu offered Mei\u2019s family a treatment: base editing, a precise gene editing technique. This technology is still quite new.<\/p>\n<p>Even he admitted in recordings to Mei\u2019s parents that \u201cfar fewer people have mastered this technique,\u201d but assured them that he was second only to David Liu, the inventor of base editing.<\/p>\n<p>People have died from gene therapy research, often because the therapy involves injecting a large amount of viruses to deliver genes to cells. This can cause a cascading immune response that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa2307798\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">can be deadly.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Qiu had to prove the treatment was effective in mice and monkeys before giving it to Mei. AnnaStills \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>Mei\u2019s case was even more complicated because Qiu\u2019s team was targeting her brain, which is protected by the blood brain barrier.<\/p>\n<p>That means many of the viruses will never reach the target, so the strategy is to deliver \u201chundreds of trillions of viruses \u2014 thousands of times more\u201d than a person getting a virus-based vaccine, like the COVID-19 vaccine, might get.<\/p>\n<p>Promising data, money flows in<\/p>\n<p>Qiu told the parents the therapy was effective in mice \u2014 where the blood-brain barrier is easier to cross. Next, he had to prove it was safe in monkeys.<\/p>\n<p>He provided images of monkey brains that showed the therapy reached every region \u2014 and \u201cthis was welcome proof that the clinical trial should go ahead,\u201d Qiu told the family. But when Science asked experts to review the images, they had concerns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s completely unconvincing,\u201d said David Sanders, a biochemist at Purdue University who has studied gene therapy. \u201cOne can\u2019t have the confidence that one isn\u2019t mostly looking at background staining.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then, a month before Mei was treated, all four monkeys that received the therapy developed moderate to severe liver damage. One showed kidney damage \u2014 a sign of a well-known reaction to AAV therapy called <a href=\"https:\/\/unckidneycenter.org\/kidneyhealthlibrary\/glomerular-disease\/thrombotic-microangiopathy-tma\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">thrombotic microangiopathy<\/a>, a deadly pattern of tiny blot clots in the smallest blood vessels in vital organs like the kidney and brain.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Qiu asked the family to send money to foundations and research organizations, and even some of the research team directly, including a $130,000 payment directly to a researcher overseeing a lab. The parents found this \u201cincreasingly troubling,\u201d Science reports.<\/p>\n<p>The treatment aimed to target Mei\u2019s brain, which is difficult because of the blood-brain barrier. snowing12 \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>Mei\u2019s death and questions emerge<\/p>\n<p>In February 2025, the family met with a doctor who told them \u201cthe biggest risk for Mei was the possibility that she had antibodies to the viral vector,\u201d Science reported. Otherwise it was \u201crelatively safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In March, she was given the treatment \u2014 trillions of viruses were injected directly into her spinal canal to get to her brain.<\/p>\n<p>Within days, she developed a fever that wouldn\u2019t go away. She also wasn\u2019t urinating, indicating her kidneys were affected. She was sent to the ICU. She died a day later.<\/p>\n<p>An emergency meeting of the hospital\u2019s ethics board determined she had died because of the treatment, and her cause of death was thrombotic microangiopathy, the same complication that might\u2019ve affected the monkey.<\/p>\n<p>The hospital was fined about $3,600, and the doctor who told the family it was \u201crelatively safe\u201d was given \u201cverbal counseling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The parents asked Qiu to withdraw a paper he\u2019d submitted to Nature about Mei\u2019s case, and he initially agreed, but eventually stopped responding to the family.
