July 30, 1610: Galileo sees Saturn&#8217;s rings for the 1st time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"elk-e0099086-8b9e-11f1-841b-5304c9275624\">On July 30, 1610, the famous astronomer <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15589-galileo-galilei.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15589-galileo-galilei.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"http:\/\/www.space.com\/15589-galileo-galilei.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Galileo Galilei<\/a> became the first to observe rings around the planet <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/48-saturn-the-solar-systems-major-ring-bearer.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/48-saturn-the-solar-systems-major-ring-bearer.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/48-saturn-the-solar-systems-major-ring-bearer.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Saturn<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after the telescope was invented in 1608, Galileo peered out into the solar system and saw the amazing ring system. At first he didn&#8217;t actually think they were rings.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-e0099086-8b9e-11f1-841b-5304c9275624-2\">Instead, Galileo thought Saturn might have planetary &#8220;love handles&#8221; that gave it a weird shape. He also wondered if perhaps he was looking at two very large moons on either side of the planet. After all, it IS known as the &#8220;ringed planet&#8221; and the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/the-universe\/saturn\/saturns-rings-could-be-much-older-than-scientists-first-thought\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/the-universe\/saturn\/saturns-rings-could-be-much-older-than-scientists-first-thought\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/the-universe\/saturn\/saturns-rings-could-be-much-older-than-scientists-first-thought\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">jewel of our solar system<\/a>. But there was a time when we didn&#8217;t know planets had rings at all, and that&#8217;s where Galileo&#8217;s discovery came in.<\/p>\n<p><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/21950-who-invented-the-telescope.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/21950-who-invented-the-telescope.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/21950-who-invented-the-telescope.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The telescope<\/a> was a brand new technology, just two years old, when Galileo took it from a seafaring and distance tool and turned it into an essential item for <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16014-astronomy.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16014-astronomy.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16014-astronomy.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">astronomy<\/a>. It helped him discover the major <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16452-jupiters-moons.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16452-jupiters-moons.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16452-jupiters-moons.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">moons of Jupiter<\/a> (we call them the Galilean moons for a reason) and also Saturn&#8217;s rings. In time, astronomers discovered rings around other large planets in our solar system (<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/jupiters-puny-rings-maybe-because-moons\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/jupiters-puny-rings-maybe-because-moons\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/jupiters-puny-rings-maybe-because-moons\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jupiter has them<\/a>, and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/uranus\/mysterious-rings-around-uranus-point-to-hidden-moons-orbiting-the-ice-giant\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/uranus\/mysterious-rings-around-uranus-point-to-hidden-moons-orbiting-the-ice-giant\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/uranus\/mysterious-rings-around-uranus-point-to-hidden-moons-orbiting-the-ice-giant\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Uranus, too<\/a>), revealing them to be made up of tiny pieces of what may have been torn apart moons.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-e00992b6-8b9e-11f1-8b41-3b2ae60fd8b3\">The study of Saturn&#8217;s rings has allowed astronomers to see the raw materials of the early solar system. They&#8217;re made mostly of water ice and shaped by so-called shepherd moons, tiny satellites that orbit Saturn in between ring bands. <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38233-saturn-features-kitten-names.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38233-saturn-features-kitten-names.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38233-saturn-features-kitten-names.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Saturn&#8217;s rings even have &#8220;kittens,&#8221;<\/a> distinct formations scientists are only now starting to understand.<\/p>\n<p>NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17785-pioneer-11.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17785-pioneer-11.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17785-pioneer-11.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pioneer 11<\/a> passed through Saturn&#8217;s ring plane in 1979, with the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17688-voyager-1.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17688-voyager-1.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17688-voyager-1.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Voyager 1<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/voyager-2\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/voyager-2\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/voyager-2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Voyager 2<\/a> probes visiting in the 1980s.
