Alongside his brother Bobby, Charlton helped the Three Lions beat West Germany 4-2 at Wembley Stadium after extra time.<\/p>\n
However, on the 60th anniversary of the final, his son John has revealed he is not in possession of his father’s winners’ medal.<\/p>\n
Instead, he has had to give it back to his mother despite being left the piece of memorabilia in his dad’s will.<\/p>\n
Charlton passed away aged 85 in 2020<\/a>.<\/p>\n READ MORE IN FOOTBALLWorld Cup winners’ medal<\/p>\n John spoke to Andy Goldstein<\/a> and Stuart Pearce<\/a> live on talkSPORT Breakfast<\/a> on Thursday morning.<\/p>\n Having called in to discuss Eddie Howe’s imminent exit<\/a> from his beloved Newcastle United<\/a>, he was asked about the World Cup triumph.<\/p>\n England’s win over West Germany came on July 30, 1966, exactly 60 years ago.<\/p>\n Revealing both his dad and uncle had kept hold of their medals, he explained: “Funny enough, me and Eddie (Howe) were talking about his medal.<\/p>\n “I think there\u2019s only him and my uncle Bobby who have kept their medals. Everybody else doesn\u2019t have them anymore.”<\/p>\n Asked where his father’s medal is, he replied: “I’ve got it.”<\/p>\n 4<\/p>\n Charlton and his brother Bobby both kept their World Cup winners’ medals, says JohnCredit: PAInheritance Tax row<\/p>\n John quickly added that it was not actually in his possession, though, due to a row over Inheritance Tax.<\/p>\n He continued: “Well, there\u2019s a bit of a problem with it, actually.<\/p>\n “When I say I\u2019ve got it, it was left to me in my dad\u2019s will, but the tax man wants \u00a3200,000 off me in Inheritance Tax.”<\/p>\n When asked if he is going to sell it, however, he added: “No, I\u2019ve given it back to my mother because whilst she\u2019s got it, I don\u2019t have to pay that money.”<\/p>\n In the United Kingdom, the standard Inheritance Tax rate is 40 per cent on the value of an estate above a \u00a3325,000 threshold.<\/p>\n John is hopeful the issue can be resolved, though, explaining: “There\u2019s a journalist from the Daily Mirror who\u2019s been working on it and helping us to try and sort it, but the same applies to Olympic gymnasts and people like that.<\/p>\n 4<\/p>\n Charlton’s son was left his World Cup medal, shirt and cap but faces a row over the Inheritance TaxCredit: Getty<\/p>\n “If they decide to sell their gold medals, they\u2019re going to have to pay. Their family, sorry, pass it on, they\u2019re going to have to pay Inheritance Tax on that. This is something that they\u2019ve been trying to sort out.”<\/p>\n It is not just his father’s World Cup medal which he has, with John also in possession of his final shirt and England cap.<\/p>\n He revealed his cap from the tournament is the only one his dad kept hold of after his playing days.<\/p>\n John concluded: “I\u2019ve got his shirt. Well, we\u2019ve got his shirt as well. His shirt and his medal are in a safe place, tucked away.<\/p>\n “And the England cap that he got because he only got one cap for the tournament and that\u2019s the only cap that he left.
