{"id":83763,"date":"2025-08-20T13:24:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-20T13:24:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/83763\/"},"modified":"2025-08-20T13:24:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-20T13:24:09","slug":"naomi-osaka-sends-instagram-message-to-gael-monfils-after-they-play-doubles-together-at-the-us-open","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/83763\/","title":{"rendered":"Naomi Osaka sends Instagram message to Gael Monfils after they play doubles together at the US Open"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Naomi Osaka competed in the revamped US Open mixed doubles tournament.<\/p>\n<p>The former world number one was due to compete alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/tag\/nick-kyrgios\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nick Kyrgios<\/a>, one half of the 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/tag\/australian-open\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Australian Open<\/a> men\u2019s doubles champions.<\/p>\n<p>But after the 30-year-old withdrew from the tournament, Osaka took to the court alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/tag\/atp\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ATP<\/a> veteran Gael Monfils.<\/p>\n<p>She was delighted to be partnered by the beloved Frenchman, and they began the event at Arthur Ashe Stadium against Lorenzo Musetti and Cary McNally.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"684\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-2230981838-1024x684.jpg\" alt=\"Gael Monfils hits a forehand alongside Naomi Osaka at the 2025 US Open - Mixed Doubles\" \/>Photo by Elsa\/Getty ImagesNaomi Osaka thrilled to play with \u2018GOAT\u2019 Gael Monfils at the US Open<\/p>\n<p>There were plenty of all-star teams in the <a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/tag\/us-open\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">US Open<\/a> mixed doubles tournament, and many pairs who have not previously played doubles together.<\/p>\n<p>Monfils and <a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/tag\/naomi-osaka\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Naomi Osaka<\/a> had not played doubles together before, and have played just 133 combined doubles matches in their careers.<\/p>\n<p>Musetti and McNally, two experienced doubles players, competed well as a team and they completed a 5-3, 4-2 victory over Osaka and Monfils.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the defeat, Osaka enjoyed her time on court with the former ATP top 10 player, which she expressed throughout a message she posted on social media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy GOAT. Thank you Gael Monfils for playing with me, it\u2019s such an honour,\u201d Osaka wrote. \u201cSee you in a few days NY.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added on her Instagram story: \u201cPlayed with my GOAT [Monfils]. Happy I can cross this off the bucket list.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"597\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-2230304155-1024x597.jpg\" alt=\"Naomi Osaka in action at the US Open 2025 mixed doubles competition\" \/>Photo by Selcuk Acar\/Anadolu via Getty ImagesNaomi Osaka is now preparing for the women\u2019s singles at the US Open<\/p>\n<p>After an appearance in the US Open mixed doubles tournament, Osaka will continue her preparations for the women\u2019s singles.<\/p>\n<p>The tournament will commence on Sunday and the Japanese star will aim to win her third championship at Flushing Meadows and a fifth Grand Slam title overall.<\/p>\n<p>She will enter the tournament in good form, having reached the final of the <a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/tag\/canadian-open\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian Open<\/a> on August 7.<\/p>\n<p>Though <a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/naomi-osaka-told-the-exact-moment-in-the-canadian-open-final-vs-victoria-mboko-where-her-tennis-deserted-her\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Osaka lost to home favourite Victoria Mboko<\/a> that day, her confidence will be high after reaching her first WTA 1000 final since 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Osaka will be seeded 25 at the US Open, one behind Mboko, which could benefit her after suffering some tricky draws in the majors since returning to the tour in 2024.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Naomi Osaka competed in the revamped US Open mixed doubles tournament.
