Planetary movements\u00a0provide viewing opportunities for Saskatchewan residents<\/p>\n
Saskatchewan residents will have several opportunities to look toward the sky this August as Mercury, Venus and Saturn move into\u00a0favourable\u00a0viewing positions.<\/p>\n
Abigail Sadowski, a\u00a0resident\u00a0Astra member with the Calum Observatory in Regina, said the month will offer several chances for people interested in astronomy to\u00a0observe\u00a0different planets.<\/p>\n
Mercury reaches greatest western elongation\u00a0<\/p>\n
According to information provided by Malcolm Warren, Mercury will reach its greatest western elongation on Aug. 2.<\/p>\n
The event means Mercury will appear farthest from the sun in the morning sky, making it a better opportunity to try and\u00a0observe\u00a0the planet.<\/p>\n
Sadowski said people should always use caution when looking toward the area of the sun.<\/p>\n
Mercury is one of the more difficult planets to\u00a0view\u00a0and binoculars or a telescope may be helpful.<\/p>\n

Venus brightens the evening sky<\/p>\n
Venus will reach its greatest eastern elongation on Aug. 14, according to Warren\u2019s information.<\/p>\n
At that point, Venus will appear farthest from the sun in the evening sky and will be easier to spot shortly after sunset.<\/p>\n
Sadowski said Venus is one of the easiest planets for people to\u00a0identify\u00a0because of its brightness.<\/p>\n
\u201cVenus, you can see easily, naked eye,\u201d Sadowski said.<\/p>\n
She added that viewers farther north may have a shorter viewing window because of the angle of the planet\u2019s path across the sky.<\/p>\n
Saturn rising earlier<\/p>\n
Saturn will also become easier to view as August progresses.<\/p>\n
Sadowski said the planet will rise earlier throughout the month, reaching approximately 9 p.m. by the end of August.<\/p>\n
While Saturn can be seen without equipment, a telescope is needed for anyone hoping to see its rings.<\/p>\n
