Floods are getting worse. Extreme heat is becoming the norm, not the exception. Communities across the country are facing a growing climate threat \u2014 and now is exactly the wrong moment for the government to be cutting the public services we rely on to respond.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{1eca45bc-1e29-4e80-b38f-65e6f9226ae2}{47}\" paraid=\"1641207042\">Cuts are hitting public services across the country, including the Government Operations Centre, which\u00a0monitors\u00a0emergencies across Canada 24\/7 and coordinates the federal response.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{1eca45bc-1e29-4e80-b38f-65e6f9226ae2}{53}\" paraid=\"1355941506\">On top of that,\u00a0PSAC\u00a0members at\u00a0Parks\u00a0Canada\u00a0and\u00a0firefighters at the\u00a0Union of\u00a0Northern\u00a0Workers\u00a0(UNW)\u00a0are\u00a0on the front lines, fighting these wildfires and helping with evacuations. In 2023, more than 300 Parks Canada firefighters were deployed during the record-breaking wildfire season.\u00a0They\u00a0also responded to the devastating Jasper wildfire in 2024 and continue to support wildfire responses across the country today.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{1eca45bc-1e29-4e80-b38f-65e6f9226ae2}{91}\" paraid=\"1736247834\">Their work goes far beyond fighting fires.\u00a0Firefighters\u00a0at Parks Canada and\u00a0at\u00a0UNW\u00a0work year-round to reduce wildfire risks through prescribed burns and emergency preparedness \u2014 and because many are trained in emergency response,\u00a0they&#8217;re\u00a0increasingly called on for floods, hurricanes,\u00a0landslides\u00a0and other disasters too. As climate emergencies intensify, these workers are being asked to do more, with fewer resources to keep up.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some communities face greater risks\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{1eca45bc-1e29-4e80-b38f-65e6f9226ae2}{125}\" paraid=\"1081871593\">Climate disasters affect everyone, but they do not affect everyone equally.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{1eca45bc-1e29-4e80-b38f-65e6f9226ae2}{131}\" paraid=\"626385489\">Indigenous, racialized,\u00a0northern\u00a0and remote communities can face greater exposure to wildfires, smoke and other environmental hazards while having fewer resources available to respond and recover.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{1eca45bc-1e29-4e80-b38f-65e6f9226ae2}{137}\" paraid=\"1798142885\">For remote communities, an evacuation can mean travelling hundreds or even thousands of\u00a0kilometres. Indigenous communities can also face the loss of homes, traditional\u00a0lands\u00a0and ways of life.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{1eca45bc-1e29-4e80-b38f-65e6f9226ae2}{143}\" paraid=\"1333471503\">This is part of the reality of environmental racism: existing inequalities can leave some communities facing greater environmental risks and fewer protections. Wildland firefighters can spend weeks away from their families, working long days in dangerous conditions, and breathing wildfire smoke. Being repeatedly deployed across fires, floods and other disasters exposes them\u00a0again and again\u00a0to traumatic situations, raising real concerns about their long-term mental health and the sustainability of this expanding workload.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{1eca45bc-1e29-4e80-b38f-65e6f9226ae2}{181}\" paraid=\"1754577666\">As climate change intensifies fire, heat, humidity and air quality risks, these workers also need updated personal protective equipment and stronger protections for rest and recovery \u2014 not the standards of a decade ago. They need enough coworkers, proper training and equipment, and strong mental health\u00a0supports.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{1eca45bc-1e29-4e80-b38f-65e6f9226ae2}{187}\" paraid=\"1119773119\">Canada needs to invest in local firefighter capacity\u00a0across the\u00a0country,\u00a0especially in the\u00a0North,\u00a0and expand Parks Canada&#8217;s wildfire and emergency response programs \u2014 including more crew capacity and more members \u2014 before demands on these workers outpace what they can safely sustain. It also needs a strong Government Operations Centre with enough workers to\u00a0monitor\u00a0threats and coordinate the federal response around the clock, and policies that help reduce emissions, like investing in remote work and public transit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraeid=\"{1eca45bc-1e29-4e80-b38f-65e6f9226ae2}{211}\" paraid=\"781456968\">Climate disasters are only getting worse. We\u00a0can&#8217;t\u00a0wait until these workers are stretched past their limit to invest in the people who keep our communities safe.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Wildfires are getting bigger.
