Construction is currently underway on a new Calgary pedestrian bridge designed to improve connections for Bridgeland-Riverside residents.<\/p>\n

According to the City of Calgary, construction on the project began during the week of July 15, 2026, with Graham Construction mobilizing the site.<\/p>\n

The project is broken into two phases, with the first phase including a new bridge connecting the north bank of the Bow River to St. Patrick\u2019s Island.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The design of the new bridge is guided by four key principles: accessibility and safety, community connection, sustainability, and constructability.<\/p>\n

The second phase, which currently doesn\u2019t have a timeline, will replace the existing bridge over Memorial Drive.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The project aims to improve accessibility to Bridgeland-Riverside, the Bridgeland-Memorial LRT Station, St. Patrick\u2019s Island, and nearby amenities, while creating a safer route for people walking, wheeling, and cycling, and strengthening the connection between the community and the Bow River.<\/p>\n

The new bridge follows years of planning after the Bridgeland-Riverside Community Association requested studies for a new bridge connection in 2020. A feasibility study was later completed by Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC), leading to designs for the bridge.<\/p>\n

The project is being funded by the Calgary General Hospital Legacy Fund, which has committed approximately $17 million toward the bridge.<\/p>\n

\u2018The Calgary General Hospital Legacy Fund Review Committee chose to fund this project because it is a healthy initiative that will encourage active modes of transportation and help connect the community to the Bow River and St. Patrick\u2019s Island.\u201d<\/p>\n
