YouTuber and science communicator Hank Green<\/a> is facing backlash after admitting he used ChatGPT to research a script for his Ask Hank Anything series.<\/p>\n

The controversy stems from Does Hank Green Shave His Butt?, a 55-minute episode featuring creator Soupytime that was uploaded to the Complexly YouTube channel on July 30.<\/p>\n

Ask Hank Anything<\/a> is billed as a reverse talk show in which celebrity guests ask Green questions about science, philosophy, and other topics. The official Complexly website says the series has featured creators including Ludwig, Rhett and Link, Michelle Khare, and Jacob Collier.<\/p>\n

Green is also the co-founder of Complexly, the educational media organization behind channels such as Crash Course, SciShow, and PBS Eons.<\/p>\n

Hank Green says he relied too much on generated notes<\/p>\n

The backlash began after a clip from the episode circulated online, with some viewers claiming Green appeared to read feedback produced by an AI chatbot<\/a>.<\/p>\n

During a \u201cFuture Hank\u201d segment, Green says, \u201cI appreciate the pushback,\u201d before expanding on a disagreement from his conversation with Soupytime. Critics claimed the wording sounded like ChatGPT responding to a user who had challenged one of its answers.<\/p>\n

Green responded by checking his notes and script from the episode. While he denied that the specific line came from ChatGPT, he confirmed that AI had been part of his research process.<\/p>\n

\u201cI did use ChatGPT for research on this script,\u201d Green said, adding that he had been \u201crelying too much on generated notes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Green called it \u201ca bad habit\u201d that developed while he was overcommitted and producing the episode under \u201ca ton of pressure.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, he maintained that neither his notes nor the script contained the disputed phrase. Green said it was an ad-libbed reference to Soupytime pushing back against his earlier claim that words are purely made up.<\/p>\n

The full episode supports that sequence of events, as Soupytime challenges Green before the video cuts to the later segment. Green has only admitted to using ChatGPT for research, not to having it write the script.<\/p>\n

That distinction did little to calm the response. By the morning of July 31, Green\u2019s post had attracted nearly three million views, while several critical replies received thousands of likes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is hugely disappointing,\u201d one viewer responded.<\/p>\n

Another accused Green of throwing away his credibility as a science educator, while others questioned whether the information in the episode could be trusted, given that ChatGPT can produce inaccurate or fabricated claims.<\/p>\n

Adding to those concerns, several viewers pointed to the seemingly unusual number of fact-checking notes inserted throughout the episode. The cards questioned or said researchers could not verify claims about cat saliva and grooming, mantis shrimp vision, and artificial sweeteners.<\/p>\n

Much of the criticism has focused on Green\u2019s position as a prominent educator and Complexly\u2019s stated mission of producing trustworthy, fact-checked content. Green has not revealed which portions of his research involved ChatGPT or whether any information generated by it appeared in the finished episode.<\/p>\n

He acknowledged that he had been \u201crelying too heavily on AI as a research aid,\u201d but reiterated that he used it to locate papers and other resources rather than form his opinions.<\/p>\n

\u201cI promise you, you are still getting my takes based on what I read, know, and learn,\u201d Green wrote. However, he agreed with viewers who felt the technology had diluted his work and made it harder to trust that his words were entirely his own.<\/p>\n

Green also admitted that the \u201cdopamine\u201d he received from interacting with large language models and constantly creating more content had become unhealthy. He said his wife, Katherine, and brother John had both expressed concerns about his behavior.<\/p>\n

As a result, Green said viewers should expect fewer videos on hankschannel, which may pause entirely for a while. He also announced that SMUSH and 4\u00d73 are being paused while he reassesses his workload and finishes a long-term video that he believes \u201creally really matters.\u201d<\/p>\n
