Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish and former mayor Bonnie Crombie engaged in a heated back\u2011and\u2011forth on X Thursday night, sparring over Parrish\u2019s decision not to vote on the city\u2019s controversial pause on new data\u2011centre applications.<\/p>\n

The exchange unfolded hours after council voted to temporarily halt new data\u2011centre proposals<\/a>, giving staff time to study the strain large\u2011scale facilities place on Mississauga\u2019s electrical grid and industrial land.<\/p>\n

Crombie criticized Parrish\u2019s decision not to vote, suggesting it reflected a lack of leadership.<\/p>\n

\u201cYesterday, Carolyn Parrish chose not to vote on the data centre issue. This is yet another example of how our city is drifting under her leadership,\u201d Crombie wrote. \u201cWe need a mayor who leads, makes her position known, and is accountable for the tough decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Parrish responded sharply, arguing that as chair of the meeting she was required not to vote.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe chair of a democratically conducted meeting is mandated not to influence the outcome of debate. Ergo they don\u2019t speak and they don\u2019t vote,\u201d she wrote. \u201cBut you never really understood that. You abandoned our city, failed to win a local riding and ended up turfed by your party.\u201d<\/p>\n

Crombie countered again, accusing Parrish of selectively choosing when to vote.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou vote when it pleases you and don\u2019t when the issue is tough. That\u2019s not leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n

Parrish replied by citing Robert\u2019s Rules of Order and Bourinot\u2019s parliamentary rules, saying chairs vote only to break or create ties.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn a democracy, every member should be free to vote according to conscience & directions of their constituents.\u201d<\/p>\n

Crombie pressed further, asking Parrish what her vote would have been<\/a> \u2014 referencing Parrish\u2019s recent controversial remark about constituents as \u201cthe great unwashed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Parrish ended the exchange with a brief sign\u2011off.<\/p>\n

\u201cLooking forward to the debates!\u201d<\/p>\n

Crombie confirmed her intention to seek re-election<\/a> as Mississauga\u2019s mayor earlier this month. She previously held the City\u2019s top job from 2014 to 2024, but left that position to lead the Ontario Liberal Party.<\/p>\n

Mississauga has seen a surge in proposals for AI\u2011driven data centres<\/a>, which require massive electrical capacity and cooling infrastructure. City staff have warned that unchecked growth could strain the grid and limit future industrial development.<\/p>\n
