A fire that caused extensive damage to a kosher restaurant in Montreal\u2019s C\u00f4te-des-Neiges neighbourhood is being investigated as a possible arson, Montreal police have said.<\/p>\n
Firefighters were called around 3:15 a.m. to a blaze on D\u00e9carie Blvd. between Plamondon Ave. and V\u00e9zina St., according to police spokesperson Rapha\u00ebl Bergeron.<\/p>\n
The building, which houses N\u00f6am, a kosher restaurant serving Mediterranean, Italian and international dishes, as well as a garage, sustained major damage before firefighters brought it under control. <\/p>\n
Bergeron said someone was seen leaving the premises shortly after the fire began, prompting authorities to transfer the case to the Montreal police arson squad.<\/p>\n
Investigators were expected to examine the scene and review surveillance footage in an effort to identify the person.<\/p>\n
Mount Royal Liberal MP Anthony Housefather said he was \u201cabsolutely disgusted\u201d by what appeared to be an arson attack on a Jewish-owned business.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis attack on a Jewish own business must be investigated as a hate crime and those involved in this criminal act must be caught & prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,\u201d he wrote on X.<\/p>\n
Asked whether the restaurant may have been targeted in a hate crime, Bergeron said investigators had yet to establish a motive.<\/p>\n
