{"id":841097,"date":"2026-08-01T21:05:18","date_gmt":"2026-08-01T21:05:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/841097\/"},"modified":"2026-08-01T21:05:18","modified_gmt":"2026-08-01T21:05:18","slug":"quebec-officially-designates-olympic-park-1976-games-as-historic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/841097\/","title":{"rendered":"Quebec officially designates Olympic Park, 1976 Games as historic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Montreal Olympic Park and the 1976 Olympic Games have been officially designated as a historic site and event under the Cultural Heritage Act.<\/p>\n<p>Quebec\u2019s Tourism Minister Am\u00e9lie Dionne,  Minister responsible for Social Solidarity Chantal Rouleau made the announcement Saturday morning on behalf of Minister of Culture Mathieu Lacombe to mark the 50th anniversary of the Montreal Olympic Games.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis anniversary is a special opportunity to highlight the importance of this site in our cultural heritage,\u201d said Dionne. \u201cThe Olympic Park reminds us that a place can honor its history while continuing to reinvent itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On this day marking the 50th anniversary of the closing ceremony of the Montreal Olympic Games, Rouleau noted that in 1976, Montreal became the first Canadian city to host the Games. The event brought together 6,084 athletes from 92 countries and left an indelible mark on Montreal\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Games gave Montreal visibility, credibility, and confidence that continue to bear fruit to this day,\u201d said Rouleau.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/CP176698706-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-497849\" style=\"width:886px;height:auto\"  \/>Jo\u00eblle Brodeur, president and CEO of the Olympic Park, speaks during a press conference at the Montreal Olympic Park on Saturday, Aug. 1, 2026. THE CANADIAN PRESS\/Anja Conton<\/p>\n<p>Dionne noted that the Montreal Games led to the setting of 45 Olympic records and highlighted the feat of the young Romanian gymnast, Nadia Com\u0103neci, who earned seven perfect scores and five medals during the gymnastics competitions. Com\u0103neci is in Montreal this week and is participating in various celebratory activities.<\/p>\n<p>The tourism minister also emphasized that the Olympic Park has now become an enduring symbol of Quebec\u2019s collective history and the history of Montreal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is now up to us to bring this historic site to life so that it continues to inspire future generations, host the major events of tomorrow, and remain a place of discovery, connection, and pride for Quebecers,\u201d Dionne said.<\/p>\n<p>The Government of Quebec stated in a press release that the designation of the Olympic Park as a historic site will help make the Olympic Stadium an even greater tourist attraction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Montreal Olympic Games left behind an exceptional tourist destination,\u201d Dionne commented in the same press release. \u201cThe Olympic Park is now one of Quebec\u2019s most recognizable landmarks and continues to attract visitors from all over the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jo\u00eblle Brodeur, president and CEO of the Olympic Park, welcomed the announcement, which comes on a particularly symbolic date.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor us, it\u2019s obviously an honor, but it\u2019s also a great responsibility. It\u2019s a legacy that we must pass on to future generations,\u201d Brodeur told La Presse Canadienne.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA historic site isn\u2019t a static place,\u201d Brodeur noted, explaining that changes are to be expected for this iconic location. \u201cIt\u2019s a place we preserve, bring to life, and continue to develop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The president and CEO noted that the site is undergoing a transformation to better fulfill its role as an economic, athletic, and cultural hub.<\/p>\n<p>Brodeur also mentioned the major concert scheduled for Saturday evening around 9 p.m. to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the closing ceremony of the Montreal Olympic Games.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere will be a show filled with music, events, and tributes, featuring artists who have left their mark over the past fifty years,\u201d she explained. \u201cIt\u2019s an inclusive gathering\u2014admission is free, and it\u2019s for families.
