Soccer is so indispensable as a shared religion that Europe said 55 nations would boycott the next World Cup, all to ensure the FIFA president wouldn’t abandon divinity and create a $20 billion company for private investors.

No, said the Europeans. No, said Asia. No, said North America and Central America. Nations don’t want any part of Infantino’s plan, including President Donald Trump, who convinced him to reverse a red card against Folarin Balogun last month but is bailing as the universe dismisses Infantino from his power base.

“I never spoke to him about that,” Trump said Friday, though one investor was Joshua Kushner, whose brother is the President’s son-in-law.

Turns out the global game is bigger than a cut on Infantino’s pinkie finger. Or, more appropriately, the shrinkage of his killer ego. Was he so stoked by authoritative muscle, after making $15 billion in the United States and Mexico and Canada, that he assumed he could take over the beast? He looked at TV ratings, drawing a global audience of six billion when the population is 8.3 billion. He swallowed America, allowing visitors to enjoy our cities and stadiums, making us believe his extravaganza was big enough to actually buy into USMNT.

He chose to become a divisive creature. He would allow FIFA to become FFE — FIFA Forward Enterprise, with $4.2 billion immediately coming from Kushner and other money men. Infantino would become the FFE commissioner. The media backlash, particularly in Europe, was mind-boggling. The European union known as UEFA squashed him, accusing Infantino of “a shabby, back room, opaque deal.” By Friday night, the smiling creep was out the back door. Who will run soccer next? First Sepp Blatter was scandalized, now Infantino is a resignation from his own scandal.

“Having listened carefully to all the views, it has become clear that the project has created divisions of a nature that, regardless of the level of support, are no longer in the interest of the objective set out in the first place,” Infantino said hours ago. “Our purpose has always been — and will always be — to unite and improve. As a result, this proposal will not proceed.”

UEFA already had trashed Infantino after his Balogun decision favored Trump and the U.S. The venom was violent. “Some things are simply too important to sell,” UEFA said in a statement. “The FIFA World Cup belongs to football. It always will. And so long as Europe has a voice, it will never be for sale.”

If Europe and its masterful leagues have lost faith in the FIFA president, he should find a new gig. “We cannot keep going on like this with secret schemes on fast track timescales, cooked up by faceless individuals and of dubious benefit to the game. We must identify those responsible and hold them to account,” UEFA said. “In the coming days and weeks, UEFA will work with its associations and in close cooperation with other confederations to reflect on how this happened and devise a plan to make sure that it cannot occur again. That review should be thorough and fundamental. No option should be off the table. The current FIFA leadership has not only lost UEFA’s confidence but also that of many other members of the football family.”

In America, we are too patient with our commissioners. Roger Goodell survived the 2010s, when some countries would have deposed him, and soon will sign a new NFL deal that could bring him close to $100 million a year. Adam Silver signed a new media deal for $77 billion but otherwise has an NBA filled with gambling and trust problems. Rob Manfred is about to let baseball die. Cathy Engelbert has a new problem every hour running the WNBA. Why is Gary Bettman still running the NHL?

But the man who runs FIFA is wounded. “I cannot stand by while FIFA considers selling a stake in the World Cup,” said Carlos Cordeiro, who resigned after working with Infantino on the White House Task Force.

“It is the project of one person,” said Kevin Lamour, FIFA chief operating officer. “Not only must this project not go ahead … but the time has now come for football political leaders to ask themselves the right questions and make the right decisions.”

Seems the “shabby, back room” deal will prompt Gianni Infantino to run away from office. It’s a matter of when Meanwhile, Donald Trump remains the President.

      ###

Jay Mariotti, called “without question the most impacting Chicago sportswriter of the past quarter-century,’’ writes general sports columns for Substack while appearing on some of the 1,678,498 podcasts and shows in production today.
