That&#8217;s because it&#8217;s when they&#8217;re most active. However, turtles can carry a lot of diseases, so if you don&#8217;t want to touch a turtle, that is fine. If you do, wash your hands,&#8221; said Tabitha Cox, senior nature interpreter at the Shubenacadie Provincial Wildlife Park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;The snapping turtle, of course, can snap. The Blanding&#8217;s can be a bit snappy, as well. Even just encouraging them [to go] in the direction they were already going in [is helpful], then that way you know they&#8217;re not going to turn around and go back.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Blanding&#8217;s turtle is listed as endangered in Nova Scotia, wood turtles are threatened, and snapping turtles are listed as vulnerable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Most of the turtles kept at the wildlife park were, at one time, illegal pets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It <a data-ylk=\"slk:is illegal to keep any native turtle species;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/novascotia.ca\/natr\/wildlife\/captivewildlife.asp\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">is illegal to keep any native turtle species<\/a> as a pet in Nova Scotia.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"There are four native species of turtle in Nova Scotia.
