{"id":841525,"date":"2026-08-02T02:15:16","date_gmt":"2026-08-02T02:15:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/841525\/"},"modified":"2026-08-02T02:15:16","modified_gmt":"2026-08-02T02:15:16","slug":"canada-trade-ottawa-to-impose-25-cabinet-import-tariff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/841525\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada trade: Ottawa to impose 25% cabinet import tariff"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">OTTAWA \u2014 Canada is imposing a temporary tariff on imports of some wood products as Ottawa awaits the findings of a probe into possible harmful practices in the global market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The federal government said in a news release that Canada will impose a 25 per cent surtax on certain wood cabinets and vanities starting Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Those tariffs will be in place for a maximum of 200 days while the Canadian International Trade Tribunal investigates whether increased imports of those goods are threatening to harm Canada\u2019s domestic producers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Wood cabinets and vanities manufactured in the United States, Mexico, Israel, Chile and developing nations will be exempt from the tariffs. The federal government said that\u2019s in keeping with Canada\u2019s international trade obligations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnnbloomberg.ca\/investing\/commodities\/2025\/09\/30\/trump-hits-canadian-lumber-producers-with-additional-10-per-cent-tariff\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.bnnbloomberg.ca\/investing\/commodities\/2025\/09\/30\/trump-hits-canadian-lumber-producers-with-additional-10-per-cent-tariff\/\">Last October, the United States imposed a 25 per cent surtax<\/a> on imports of certain upholstered wooden furniture, kitchen cabinets and vanities from Canada. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnnbloomberg.ca\/tariffs\/2026\/01\/01\/trump-delays-increased-tariffs-on-upholstered-furniture-kitchen-cabinets-and-vanities-for-a-year\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.bnnbloomberg.ca\/tariffs\/2026\/01\/01\/trump-delays-increased-tariffs-on-upholstered-furniture-kitchen-cabinets-and-vanities-for-a-year\/\">The U.S. hit pause at the start of this year<\/a> on plans to ramp those tariffs up to 30 per cent on furniture and 50 per cent on cabinets and vanities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Finance Minister Fran\u00e7ois-Philippe Champagne asked for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnnbloomberg.ca\/tariffs\/2026\/04\/27\/canadian-manufacturers-call-for-tariffs-on-global-imports-of-wood-products\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.bnnbloomberg.ca\/tariffs\/2026\/04\/27\/canadian-manufacturers-call-for-tariffs-on-global-imports-of-wood-products\/\">Canadian International Trade Tribunal inquiry back in April<\/a> at the request of the Canadian Wood Products Alliance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The tribunal is expected to report its findings by Jan. 15, 2027, and may recommend certain remedies if warranted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">If the inquiry finds no injury, the surtax will immediately drop.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The federal government said \u201csafeguard measures\u201d like the temporary tariffs are permitted under World Trade Organization governing principles whenever there\u2019s evidence that products are being imported in quantities large enough to harm domestic producers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Champagne said in a statement Friday that the federal government is imposing the temporary surtax to protect Canada\u2019s wood product manufacturers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThis provisional safeguard measure will help ensure that Canada\u2019s wood cabinets and vanities industry can compete on a level playing field, maintain good jobs, and continue contributing to the strength of our economy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 31, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Related Stories<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"OTTAWA \u2014 Canada is imposing a temporary tariff on imports of some wood products as Ottawa awaits the&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":841526,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[194295],"tags":[45,49,48,46,47,20739],"class_list":["post-841525","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-ottawa","tag-business","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-economy","tag-national","tag-ottawa"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/841525","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=841525"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/841525\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/841526"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=841525"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=841525"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=841525"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
