We often hear about Nintendo games that start out as one thing and then transform into another during the development process. That actually happened with Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, which was originally pitched as a Zelda game. Unfortunately for the person behind the game idea, the pitch went so well that it led to them literally torching their prototype.<\/p>\n
Nintendo\u2019s Shinya Hiratake is the man who came up with the idea for Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, which actually started life as a pitch for a Zelda game. This pitch was made to Shigeru Miyamoto, complete with a real-life diorama that explained how the game worked. Miyamoto actually loved the diorama\u2026but only because he thought it was a toy, and not a pitch for a videogame. Once Miyamoto learned that this diorama was made to explain a game, he shot the idea down.<\/p>\n
Koichi Hayashida: \u201cThe thing we noticed was that if Mario could jump, the stages become pretty big, so we wondered whether it would be possible to make a game with a character who can\u2019t jump. (Super Mario 3D World level designer Shinya Hiratake) submitted an idea to Mr. Miyamoto, the father of both Super Mario and Zelda, to use Link as the character. If Hiratake had given a better presentation, there\u2019s a chance it would have been a different game with Zelda instead.\u201d<\/p>\n

While that story is no doubt a sad one, we know it eventually had a happy ending. The idea for Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker eventually came to life as standalone puzzle stages in Super Mario 3D World, and Miyamoto ended up so impressed by that that he gave the greenlight for the spin-off that became Captain Toad Treasure Tracker, which Hiratake co-directed.<\/p>\n
