Internet drama over this issue is heated and still ongoing<\/a>, even though Green\u2014who is the brother of YA author John Green and an early YouTube star turned science explainer guy<\/a>\u2014has already apologized. More than that, he has provided a lengthy account of what he perceives the problem to be<\/a>. I need to readjust.\u201d<\/p>\n The apparent issue came to light when Green answered a pointed question during one of his videos, and his answer included<\/a> the line \u201cA better way to say it, and I appreciate the pushback, is a word is a human invention, and human inventions are made by bodies and brains working together.\u201d LLMs say things like \u201cI appreciate the pushback\u201d all the time when they hallucinate or otherwise output something weird or wrong and the user corrects it.<\/p>\n In a now deleted tweet<\/a>, Green denied<\/a> that he was reading something generated by an LLM, but acknowledged that he uses LLM notes, and that the video has an \u201cAI feel.\u201d In his lengthy apology and explanation on Reddit, he describes using LLMs, specifically ChatGPT, as something of a crutch. He describes it as useful for quickly accessing scholarly papers, and\u2014more troublingly\u2014for giving himself frequent hits of \u201cdopamine,\u201d a habit that other people in his life have noticed.<\/p>\n Fan reactions have been mixed. Many have been supportive<\/a>, but there are full-throated denunciations, like one<\/a> that calls this debacle \u201cdisgusting\u201d and says it will \u201cset science communication back YEARS.\u201d<\/p>\n Most negative comments are more ambivalent. One says<\/a>, \u201cRegardless of the actual validity or otherwise of AI \u2014 of whether or not there are, in fact, valid use cases for it \u2014 I just don\u2019t think the community that Hank and John have cultivated over the last 20 years is one that\u2019s ever going to accept AI.\u201d<\/p>\n Many comments are just nerdy and inscrutable, like:\u00a0 \u201cOh that<\/a>\u2019s awful.
