Before the Seattle Mariners grew into an organization with legitimate aspirations and the player-development prowess to match, Castillo embodied a level of consistent production and professionalism that the Mariners’ staff as a whole had yet to reach.<\/p>\n
Sadly, it turns out that his timeline and that of the club he helped push forward did not match up in the end. Castillo was dealt to the White Sox late Saturday. The package is notable, in the short term, for the inclusion of Seranthony Dominguez, a long-capable, late-inning reliever enduring a substandard year in Chicago. He will help Seattle’s surprisingly undermanned bullpen, a unit that coughed up yet another lead on Friday against Minnesota.<\/p>\n
But this deal is most important for the departure of Castillo. He became somewhat superfluous over the past few months as rotation mate Emerson Hancock matured into an effective starter. Castillo’s contract \u2014 the pro-rated remainder of $22.75 million this year and $22.75 million next year \u2014 is now Chicago’s responsibility. In Seattle, Castillo was firmly the sixth-best starter on a team with six starters; Seattle’s move to a six-man rotation earlier this season was the best bad option, considering Hancock’s emergence.<\/p>\n
