The 2026 World Junior Summer Showcase is complete.

No medals are awarded at the end of the event, but the Swedes will be happy after winning three straight games to close out the tournament. Their 5-2 victory today against their biggest rivals, Finland, was a dominant effort, with Viktor Klingsell, Alexander Command, Filip Ekberg, Torkel Jennesjo and Isac Nilsson finding the back of the net. Jeremi Virtanen and Vilho Vanhatalo potted home goals of their own for the Finns, but it wasn’t enough to secure the deal

All eyes were on the all-North American matchup to close the tourney, especially with Windsor being a border town. Unfortunately for the hosts, Canada yet again fell flat in a spotlight international game, losing 5-2 to the Americans. Sammy Nelson opened the scoring at 21:32 shorthanded, while Ethan Wyttenbach tallied two himself. Further goals from Sean Barnhill, Brooks Rogowski, Wyatt Cullen and Vern Fiddler helped put the game so far out of reach, resulting in the WFCU Centre clearing out quite early.

Here’s a look at the top performers from the final day of play in Windsor, with a bigger breakdown of the whole week coming on Sunday:

Finland 2, Sweden 5

Finland

#12 Aapo Katavisto, RW: Katavisto had an assist on the first Finnish goal. He also was one of the better puck-carriers up the ice, and I thought his skating stood out. The mid-sized forward can’t rely on a big frame to do damage. Instead, he plays with pace and high-end hockey sense, often making quick passes – even through traffic – to help get the puck where it needs to be. I think Katavisto could fill an energy role for the Finns, even if it’s higher up the lineup.

#29 Vilho Vanhatalo, RW (Florida Panthers): So, it turns out that being a 6-foot-4 forward has its advantages. Sweden seemed to really struggle with Vanhatalo around the net. And he scored the second Finnish goal as proof of that. He also had a goal that was taken back due to goal interference, but he still had a strong shift beforehand, regardless. Vanhatalo’s not the fastest winger in the world but he’s very difficult to contain on the rush and he’s got a lot of power behind his shot. I could see him being a decent bottom-six player at the World Juniors.

Sweden

#30 Kevin Törnblom, G: While his Finnish counterpart struggled, Törnblom played excellently. Today, he had to make some big stops in the first half in particular, including a diving glove save. I like his glove hand because he always keeps it up and active. Many expect him to be the odd-man out come WJC time, but Törnblom has proven he can steal the odd game sometimes. It was fun watching him look so dialed in today.

#19 William Håkansson, D (Carolina Hurricanes): Håkansson had yet another excellent game. He had the primary assist after his blast in the third period was tipped in, but he also was rock-solid defensively. Håkansson doesn’t make many errors with the puck, and while he’s typically a bit hesitant to make high-risk passes, I don’t recall seeing him this comfortable with the puck ever before. He was easily one of my favorite defenders over the past week.

Winnipeg JetsTeam Cap Summary

Cap Summary

Projected Cap Hit

$99,518,332

$86,266,666

Projected Cap Space

$4,481,668

$27,233,334

Current Cap Space

$4,481,668

$27,233,334

View cap summary for:Tampa Bay LightningUtah MammothNashville PredatorsFlorida Panthers

#17 Torkel Jennersjo, RW: With a goal and an assist, Jennersjo had another excellent showing. He’s a depth player by all accounts, but one who’s absolutely fearless in front of the net and has the willingness to take abuse to pull off a tip. Jennersjo has a solid chance of making it as a fourth-line energy guy, but I believe he’ll thrive in a role like that.

#25 Viktor Klingsell, RW (Winnipeg Jets): Klingsell is such a smart, skilled forward who has consistently found himself in dangerous scoring lanes. He tallied a goal in the first period to give the Swedes some life, and he also had another good look on a later power play. Klingsell had a good week in Windsor; I think he’ll be a solid middle-six contributor who can be relied on in open ice.

#29 Morgan Anderberg, C (Tampa Bay Lightning): Anderberg had an excellent showing today, registering two assists in the second period alone. Known more for his defensive ability, this marked his most productive game in a Swedish jersey ever. It also showcased just how good Anderberg is in the faceoff dot while being quick, too. His ability to burn past opponents on the perimeter makes him intriguing as a late-round draft pick by the Lightning.

Canada 2, USA 7

Canada

#9 Cole Reschny, C (Calgary Flames): Canada’s offense was definitely lackluster today, but they could count on Reschny to drive the play. He was stopped on an excellent scoring chance early in the second, but made up for it by assisting on the 2-1 Canadian goal later that same shift. I like him on the power play, and I feel like he does a tremendous job of controlling the puck through traffic, as well. Reschny will be one of Canada’s top forwards at the upcoming World Juniors, no doubt about it.

#25 Ethan Belchetz, LW (Utah Mammoth): Belchetz had another strong showing, battling hard and winning most of his battles in the attacking zone. That included a good effort that led to the 1-1 goal in the second, stealing the disk near the blueline and wasting no time getting the shot release off. For a guy who hadn’t played in about half a year, Belchetz looked like a man on a mission this week. He was physically strong, but also always active on the attack and giving his linemates quality locations to pass to.

USA

#30 Ryder Fetterolf, G (Carolina Hurricanes): There was clearly a heavy goalie advantage in this one. Fetterolf couldn’t have done much on the two goals against in the second period – his team kind of let him down there. But from there, he was downright dominant, outdueling Lucas Beckman at the other end of the ice. Fetterolf isn’t big but he moves fluidly and reads passes as well as any goalie his age. Seriously, his side-to-side footwork is as good as you’ll find. There’s a ton of competition for the American crease (Brady Knowling, who wasn’t in Windsor, is the favorite to be the starter), but it’ll be difficult to leave Fetterolf home.

#4 Asher Barnett, D (Edmonton Oilers): Barnett had a quiet tournament, but i liked how consistently he broke up plays today. He forced the Canadians to use the perimeter a bit too much, resulting in Barnett coming out on top in most battles. Barnett is decent with the puck, but he’s more known for being quite physical despite not being that huge. I prefer his own-zone game to the O-zone, and I feel like he’s strong off the puck for someone his age.

#12 Ethan Wyttenbach, RW (Calgary Flames): Tired of seeing Wyttenbach in the headline? Well, sorry, but he was easily the best player in the tournament. He had a quiet first half, and then proceeded to score twice in the second period to give his team the lead. The skilled winger was relentless all tournament, finding loose pucks and banging in rebounds all over the ice. Today’s performance saw him get better as the game wore on, and it showed just how dangerous he is in 1-on-1 situations.

#38 Wyatt Cullen, C (Nashville Predators): Cullen didn’t need to be flashy to be effective. But, man, few players in this tournament were capable of catching up to his play. I felt like he made a ton of great plays and transition and his two-way game was exceptionally strong. He had multiple close chances on his own and finished the night with a goal and two assists. There’s no doubt that he’s going to be a top six player on the American roster when the tournament happens for real, but today was a great start.

PRESENTED BY THE DAILY FACEOFF NEWSLETTER

Your daily hockey fix, delivered straight to your inbox.
