He noted he had been reinstated last night and in his first move, he wanted to “call things down the middle and do what’s best for business,” so he added a wrestler to this match. Out came Gunther. Sami threw a fit. Barrett protested too. He said “mis-management” has once again screwed over Sami. Cole said Balor has just as much of a right to be upset by this decision. Gunther laughed in Sami’s face. Balor looked displeased. Aldis said, “Just one more thing.” Fans cheered. He said he didn’t say it would stop at three. Fans cheered. He said he made it a Fatal 4-Way. After a dramatic pause, Kevin Owens’ music played and he came out. Sami threw an even bigger fit and watched slack-jawed. Cole said Sami looked like he saw a ghost.

KO wore a t-shirt that said “KO: The Return.” (They make those t-shirts fast!) They showed a woman crying in reaction. Cole said the fans have come unglued. Cole talked about KO’s neck surgery and how he didn’t know if he would ever wrestle again. He said he was last in a match 17 months ago, an Unsanctioned Street Fight against Sami. Sami studied KO, trying to get a read on him. They cut to another woman in the crowd crying. The bell rang 9 minutes into the hour.

KO charged at Gunther immediately. Then he went after Balor. He landed cannonballs in opposite corners on Gunther and Balor. Gunther and Balor rolled to ringside. Sami trepidaciously walked over to KO. They hugged. Fans cheered. KO then punched Sami. Sami punched back. KO clothesliend Sami to the mat and landed a senton splash. Barrett said KO looked “completely unstoppable.” KO leaped off the top rope with a cannonball onto a gathering of all three opponents at ringside. Barrett said you’re supposed to ease yourself back into action after an injury. Cole said KO said, “To hell with that.” KO hit (grazed) Gunther with a top rope swanton. Gunther put KO in a sleeper. Sami broke it up as Cole explained the first to score a pin or submission gets the no. 1 contendership.

Barrett wondered how much last night took out of Gunther. Gunther took control against Balor briefly until Balor landed a Sling Blade. Balor dropkicked Sami into Gunther, then leaped off the top rope with Coup de Grace, but Gunther moved. Gunther powerbombed Balor and then applied a Boston Crab. KO broke it up. KO stomped away aggressively at Gunther in the corner. Gunther caught a charging KO with a boot. KO popped up and clotheslined Gunther. Balor leaped and knocked KO off balance on the top rope. He then set up a superplex, but KO turned it into a top rope Fisherman’s suplex. Sami threw KO out of the ring and made the cover on Balor for a two count. Fans chanted “Sami sucks!” Col ee said Sami should try to shut up his critics by actually winning instead of complaining about being a victim.

Sami lifted his knees on a Swanton. Cole said KO landed on the back of his surgically repaired neck. When the ref backed Sami away, Barrett implored the ref to let Sami finish the job. Gunther cut off Sami’s attempt at a Helluva Kick and applied a sleeper. Balor landed a Coup de Grace on Sami. Gunther (sort of) broke up the cover, but he was late and the ref had to stop his count early. Barrett said that was 2.99 seconds. It was more like 3.11 seconds.

KO gave Balor a stunner a minute later. Then he gave Gunther a stunner. He went for a stunned on Sami, but Sami blocked it and turned it into a Blue Thunder Bomb for a near fall. Sami set up a Helluva Kick. Fans booed. KO caught him with a superkick instead and then hit a stunner for the clean win.

WINNER: Owens in 10:00 to earn a WWE Title match

(Keller’s Analysis: That was a big surprise change in plans. Sami vs. Balor would’ve been a really good match, but the return of KO was a newsworthy and crowd-pleasing addition. It’s not clear what KO did to actually deserve a chance to become no. 1 contender after 17 months away. There’s doing what’s best for business, but if makes a bit of a mockery of getting WWE Title matches on some basis of merit, it comes with a price too. The match was non-stop action.)

(2) TRICK WILLIAMS vs. BARON CORBIN (w/Lil’ Yachty) – US Title match

Cole said this is a different Corbin than last time he was in WWE. He said he left WWE a few years ago to “get a bad taste out of his mouth and reinvent himself and find himself and understand what that missing edge up was to become a massive superstar of caliber here in WWE.” He said he’s a “massive badass” and he’d get into that in a moment. Yachty came out and asked, “Minnesota, what’s the deal?” He introduced Trick.

The bell rang 32 minutes into the hour with Trick going on the attack. Corbin stopped Trick’s momentum with a Deep Six at ringside. Corbin stayed on the attack in the ring. He yelled at booing fans. Cole said Corbin was beating the hell out of the US Champion. Barrett said Trick is facing a great wall as part of his learning curve. They swung wildly at each other on the ring apron. Corbin raked Trick’s eyes and knocked him to the floor. When Yachty got in Corbin’s face, Corbin shoved him against the barricade. Yachty stood with a kendo stick. Corbin returned to teh ring and a rested Trick went on the attack. He gave Corbin a neckbreaker and some spinning wheel kicks followed by a Bookend for a two count. Cole said he’d love to have heard Booker’s call of that move on WWE Radio.

Trick lifted Corbin onto his shoulders. Corbin raked Trick’s eyes, then wandered oddly against the ropes for the spot where Yachty hit him with a Kendo stick. Corbin had to pause because Yachty missed his cue and he had to lean against the ropes and wait for him. (There will be heat on Yachty backstage for thta. You could hear him yell, “Yachty, come on.”) Trick then gave Corbin a released Death Valley Driver.

Trick fended off Corbin’s comeback by countering an End of Days with a tornado kick for a two count for a near fall. Trick set up a Trick Shot, but Corbin rolled out of the path. (Can we please retire the “Nobody home!” cliche every time a wrestler moves out of the way of a move?) When Corbin grabbed the US Title belt, Yachty grabbed it. Corbin grabbed Yachty. Trick knocked into Corbin, which sent Yachty through the table at ringside. Corbin then hit Trick with the title belt as the ref was checking on Yachty. Corbin then gave Trick his End of Days for the win.

WINNER: Corbin in 10:00 to capture the US Title

(Keller’s Analysis: Rudimentary match and largely passable. Yachty was more of a hindrance to Trick’s act during this match as it just seemed like a circus and makes it seem like Trick needs help from a celebrity friend, not a great look for a babyface.) [c]

(3) LASH LEGEND vs. TIFFANY STRATTON vs. JADE CARGILL vs. CHESLEA GREEN vs. CHARLOTTE FLAIR – Ladder Match for the Interim Women’s Title

Charlotte was the last to make her entrance. Jade attacked her in the aisle and the ref called for the bell 57 minutes into the hour. Tiffany and Lash battled at ringside, with Lash powerbombing Tiffany into a ladder at irngside. Chelsea leaped through the ropes, but Lash caught her and slammed her against the ladder.

Lash slammed Charlotte on a ladder in the ring. Cole talked about the history of ladder matches at SummerSlam, starting with Razor Ramon vs. Shawn Michaels. Tiffany and Chelsea worked together against Lash and Jade. Cole said Tiffany was hesitant to bond with Chelsea, but she was into it now. Lash and Jade kicked Tiffany and Chelsea out of the ring, then went after each other. Lash pressed Charlotte and threw her across the ring.

Charlotte and Tiffany squared off mid-ring a minute later. Charlotte slammed Tiffany chest-first onto a ladder bridged in the corner. Chelsea hit Charlotte with a missile dropkick off the top rope, appearing to barely graze her. Cole said she “got just enough of it.” Chelsea climbed the tall ladder mid-ring. Jade pulled her down and gave her a Jaded into the ladder bridged in the corner. Jade then climbed the ladder. Tiffany tried climbing the ladder next. Charlotte climbed next to her and knocked her down.

Lash powerbombed Tiffany onto the bridged ladder. Charlotte climbed to the top of the ladder a minute later and grabbed the belt, but Jade pulled the ladder away. Jade and Lash then yanked Charlotte down by her boots. Jade lifted Charlotte and swung her into the ladder in the corner. Lash climbed a ladder mid-ring. Tiffany knocked her down. Lash yanked Stratton and powerbombed her into a ladder in the corner. Tiffany climbed the ladder and reached for the belt, but she was off-center. Chelsea then tipped over the ladder and sent Tiffany flying into a crowd of three others at ringside. She took then down with a Swanton. “Chelsea’s got a chance! Chelsea’s got a chance!” exclaimed Cole. As she reached for the belt, Michin and B-Fab ran into the ring and pulled Chelsea down. Cole exclaimed, “There are no disqualifications!”

Jade climbed a ladder. Charlotte tried to stop her, but Jade kicked her. Charlotte climbed the other side of the ladder. They battled on the top. Lash and Tiffany climbed another ladder “Something has to give here,” said Cole. Jade knocked Lash and Tiffany down. Charlotte and Jade then went back to battling for the win on top of the ladder. They crashed to the mat. Fans popped as Chelsea sat up and climbed the ladder again. This time, she unfastened it for the win. Fans popped.

WINNER: Chelsea Green in 13:00 to become Interim Women’s Champion

(Keller”s Analysis: Fun match with the various personalities playing off of each other. They made the right call having Chelsea win based on crowd support. It wasn’t the crispest of ladder matches, but they did enough to reach the range of fan expectations for bumps and big spots in a match like this.)

-They showed a scene of the WWE Takeover merchandise event at the Minneapolis Auditorium. [c]

-They showed an aerial view of the stadium and then threw to clips of how non-English announcers have covered the big happenings at Summerslam.

(4) DOMINIK MYSTERIO vs. DANHAUSEN – Human Monies on a Pole match

A bag was hanging above the ring with a dollar sign on it and Cole said there wsa $100,000 on it. He explained the way to win was to pull the bag off the pole, and there were no DQs or submissions or pinfalls. The bell range 25 minutes into the hour. Cole questioned why someone should get their money back if they invest in a business and it isn’t profitable. Cole said Dom and JD handed their money to Danhausen, so it’s not like he stole it.

Dom went for a Three Amigos suplex series, but Danhausen blocked it and took Dom hard to the mat. He sat and let our a yell. Danhausen climbed to the second rope at 2;00, but JD interfered. Cole said it was a matter of time and there’s nothing the ref could do. Four Minihausens ran out and jumped JD. JD beat them up. ToritoHausen was one of them. He beat up JD and then climbed to get the bag of Human Monies. Dom cleared the ring until ToritoHausen sent Dom to ringside with a huracanrana.

Danhausen went for the bag, but JD knocked him down with “that Bison-like head,” said Cole. As JD continued to interfere, Joe Hendry came out to his music with a guitar in hand. He bashed JD across his back with the guitar.

In the ring, Danhausen and Dom battled on the top rope near the hanging bag of money on a pole. Dom crotched Danhausen, but Danhausen cursed him and pyro blasted in Dom’s face. Danhausen the pulled the bag of Human Monies down to win.

Danhausen threw bills to the fans. Cole begged for money and Danhausen threw him some bills. It appeared there were real $1 bills and then $100 Danhausen bills.

WINNER: Danhausen in 7:00.

(Keller’s Analysis: I suppose that’s what was expected for the most part, for better or for worse. Some of the fans were into it.)

-They played a clip of Vic Joseph and Booker T calling some of the action on Radio WWE earlier.

-They showed Jim Brunzell and Brian Blair as the Killer Bees, Rick Martel, Greg Gagne, and Molly Holly.

(Keller’s Analysis: Cole didn’t mention the AWA context of Brunzell, Gagne, or former AWA Champion Martel. The last stadium show in Minnesota was on the land that US Bank Stadium is now on when it was the Metrodome for AWA’s WrestleRock ’86 supershow. WrestleRock drew around 23,000, so this event only outdrew it by 10,000 with a disappointing turnout of around 33,000.)

(5) PENTA vs. CHAD GABLE – Intercontinental Title match

On the pre-show, Corey Graves said he didn’t care who won, but this would be an all-time classic to watch. Gable got the hometown fans to clap above their heads to his music. Cole listed Intercontinental Title matches over the years at Summerslam. The bell rang 49 minutes into the second hour.

They engaged in rapid-fire back-and-forth athletic spots in the early minutes. Penta landed a top rope flip dive onto Gable at ringside. Gable grabbed at his left shoulder and winced. Penta stood and threw Gable into the ring as the ref’s count reached 4. Penta then landed a PentaDriver for a near fall.

Gable kept selling his shoulder as Penta focused on it including several roundkicks. Penta went for a move on the ring apron, but Gable countered with a German suplex. Penta fell to the floor. Gable landed a top rope moonsault onto Penta at ringside at 9;00. Gable landed a top rope headbutt to Penta’s shoulder, but then grabbed his shoulder in pain again. They fought on the ring apron. Penta gave Gable a Mexican Destroyer for a near fall. Back in the ring, Gable came back with an anklelock. He dropped to the mat and Penta tapped out.

Gable sat in the corner of the ring and cried. Penta helped him stand, but then yanked the belt away. He waved for the fans to quite down, and then he stood behind Gable and put the belt around his waist. Gable’s family joined him in the ring including his mom and dad. He said he was raised in Minneapolis and lives in Minneapolis and he can finally say he is the Intercontinental Champion.

WINNER: Gable in 11:00 to capture the Intercontinental Title.

(Keller’s Analysis: On a show that’s merely two hours in at this point with one match to go and under 50 total minutes of wrestling through the first five matches, they couldn’t allot more than 11 minutes for this potential classic that Graves build up before the show a sure-fire match for the ages? I suppose the commercial breaks themselves account for knocking 5 or 10 really good minutes off of most of these matches on PLEs these days. The match was good, but I don’t. think all that memorable. It felt like a nice TV match teasing a longer epic PLE match.) [c]

-Justin Jefferson stood on the announce desk and said it was time for the main event as he held up a Minnesota Vikings replica title belt. [c]

(6) ROMAN REIGNS vs. SETH ROLLINS – World Hvt. Title match

Seth made his entrance wearing an outfit that blended the fashion styles of David Bowie and Elton John. Cole said Seth believes his redemption arc will be completed tonight and tonight is his rebirth. Seth stood in the ring and soaked up the scene. (I doubt, in all the times Seth dreamed of this match taking place, he thought he’d be headlining the most disappointing attendance to a major WWE event in generations.) Before Roman’s music played, some fans sang, “Roman, Roman Reigns!” (It wasn’t that strong of a chant. This match feels so cold.)

Reigns then made his entrance. Cole talked about the impact of The Shield and how Seth and Reigns have been pioneers of this era “and gotten us to where we are today.” He said “once and for all tonight they want to shed the obsession they’ve had with each other these last 12 years.” (Seth more obsessed than Reigns, I’d say.) Cole said Reigns wants this reign to be different and do everything on his own, and so far he has. Barrett said when things go awry, though, people tend to fall back on bad habits. Fans sang Seth’s song and Seth smiled and soaked it up. Formal ring introductions then took place. The bell rang 29 minutes into the hour.

They exchanged some words before locking up mid-ring. “Every big match they’ve had, Seth Rollins wins,” said Cole. When Seth went for a dive through the ropes at 7:00, Reigns punched him out of mid-air. Reigns then landed a Drive By. Reigns clotheslined Seth over the barricade. A little girl in the crowd turned her back to them as they brawled so she could film a selfie of herself and then in the background.

When they fought back to ringside, Seth charged at Reigns, but Reigns stuffed him and then powerbombed him onto the announce desk, which collapsed. Reigns cleared the other announce desk. Seth slipped out of Reigns’s grip and powerbombed Reigns onto the desk, which also collapsed. Both were down and slow to get up. Back in the ring, Seth landed a Pedigree for a near fall.

Seth set up a stomp, but Reigns countered with a Superman Punch (that showed a ton of light on the initial angle). Both were down and slow to get up. They showed an overhead shot of bothon their backs mid-ring. Seth leapfrogged a spear attempt by Roman who crashed into the middle turnbuckle, and then landed a signature stomp for a near fall at 17:00.

Seth landed a superplex, but Reigns stood and applied a guillotine as they stood. The camera showed Cole and Barrett leaning down to watch the action on the monitors on the ground. Seth tried to suplex his way out of it. Reigns flipped out of it and stumbled, but then hit a spear for a dramatic near fall. Reigns sat up and yelled, “That was a three!” He started to yell at Seth about how he’s always been number two. Seth, on his back, called for Reigns to bring it.

When Reigns went for a spear, Seth countered with a spear of his own leading to a two count. Seth stood over Reigns and said, “The only reason you’re number is they insist on making you number one. You understand that. Tonight, I take that for me.” Seth gave Reigns a bucklebomb and went for a stomp, but Reigns moved and then gave Seth a bucklebomb. He followed by giving Seth a stomp for a dramatic near fall. “Rollins is alive!” said Cole. “Rollins is alive!” They showed a replay with Cole in the background going bananas. “What a damn match!” said Cole. A sort “This is awesome!” chant almost started.

Reigns and Seth sat up and exchanged more heated words. “It’s only been me and you,” said Reigns. “Every since that motherf—-in’ [inaudible], it’s only been me and you.” They stood and kept talking. Then they started swinging at each other. Seth inadvertently elbowed the ref, who went down. Seth then landed a rebound clothesline. “Hello, Dean Ambrose!” said Cole. Seth set up a Pedigree, but Reigns gave Seth a Death Rider. Cole made mention of “the third Shield member.” Reigns stood and went for a spear, but Reigns speared the ref instead of Seth. Seth then gave Reigns a stomp. Both were down again and slow to get up. Cole said, “This is one of the damndest matches that I’ve had the opportunity to call.” Barrett said they’ve shown “industrial-level durability.”

Seth sat up first. Cole said, “This is one of those matches you never want to see end.” Seth left the ring and eyed the World Title belt and then grabbed a chair. He brought it into the ring. Cole said that’s the weapon that started this all. Reigns stood and surprised Seth with a punch. Seth went down and Reigns eyed the chair. Reigns picked up the chair and waited for Seth to stand. He threw the chair aside. Seth turned slowly. Cole said Reigns said he’s moved past the obsession and is ready to settle it “man to man.” Fans applauded as they walked toward each other and had a staredown 30 minutes into the match.

As they began swinging away at each other, Barrett said they were in round 12. The back-and-forth strikes intensified with a headbutt and kicks and more punches. Reigns went for a spear, but Seth blocked it and turned it into a Pedigree. Seth then went for a stomp, but Reigns moved. Seth went for it again and landed it. He followed with a top rope stomp attempt, but Reigns moved and speared Seth. Cole noted there was still no referee. Reigns speared Seth again, but noticed there was no referee. Reigns looked for the ref, who was at ringside still recovering. He then stood in the corner and shook his head and let out a yell and charged at Seth with a third spear. The ref counted to three.

Cole said he didn’t know what to say because he said that was one of the greatest main events he’s seen at Summerslam. Cole said Reigns proved he was one step better. They each sat on opposite sides of the ring and contemplated the war they just went through. Reigns stood first and extended his fist in an invitation to reconcile or agree to a truce. Seth stood and fist-bumped Reigns. Fans cheered. They posed together and Reigns pointed at Seth. “And it is forever done,” said Cole. “The final chapter. The book has closed.”

WINNER: Reigns in 33:00 to retain the World Title.

(Keller’s Analysis: A very good main event with an epic feel. It had a strong story and pulled from their history as allies and rivals about as effectively as you could. The references to Dean Ambrose and the ref bump and the tease of use of a chair were all effective red herrings that this would be something other than a clean, decisive fight to a clean finish. It’s too bad the actual interest in this match didn’t match the hype and how they tried to build up their history. Cole’s hype for how good this was got overwrought and obnoxious because it felt like he was telling viewers how to feel.
