<\/p>\nC\u00f4te-des-Neiges\u2013Notre-Dame-de-Gr\u00e2ce borough Mayor St\u00e9phanie Valenzuela said the restaurant fire, coming days after a vehicle fire damaged the exterior of a mosque elsewhere in the borough, could understandably cause concern among residents. She stressed, however, that authorities had found no indication the two incidents were connected.<\/p>\n

The Montreal fire department is investigating the fire near the mosque, but the case had not been transferred to Montreal police and was not considered suspicious.<\/p>\n
In a statement posted on social media, Valenzuela said the borough was in contact with police and leaders from the affected communities and was closely monitoring the situation.<\/p>\n
\u201cActs of violence and intimidation have no place in our neighbourhoods,\u201d she wrote. \u201cWe remain vigilant and committed to the safety of our communities.\u201d<\/p>\n
Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree said on social media the federal government was concerned by what appeared to be an arson attack at a gathering place for Montreal\u2019s Jewish community.<\/p>\n
\u201cAntisemitism simply has no place in our society and we must do everything we can to eradicate it wherever it manifests,\u201d he said in his post.<\/p>\n
Mount Royal MP Anthony Housefather said he was \u201cabsolutely disgusted\u201d and called for the case to be investigated as a hate crime.<\/p>\n
In a post on social media, he said those responsible should be caught and prosecuted \u201cto the fullest extent of the law.\u201d<\/p>\n
Federal Identity and Culture Minister Marc Miller also condemned the fire, saying on social media he trusted the \u201cdisgraceful act\u201d would be properly investigated as a hate crime.<\/p>\n
B\u2019nai Brith Canada, a Jewish advocacy organization, also condemned the fire and called for action.<\/p>\n
\u201cJewish Canadians have heard enough condemnation and promises,\u201d it said in a statement posted on social media. \u201cNow we need action.\u201d<\/p>\n
