Well, there’s a new sartorial saga unfolding in pro cycling. This time, the controversy is brewing at the Tour de France Femmes.

With the individual TT coming up, there’s some chatter in the peloton. And similar to the sock length debacles a few years ago, it involves cycling kit.

Several Women’s WorldTeams are urging the UCI to more closely enforce a little-discussed rule involving aerodynamic equipment hidden beneath riders’ skinsuits.

The UCI is banning socks (on helmets)

The issue isn’t entirely new, well, except now it involves sports bras. The UCI cracked down recently on riders positioning race radios on the front of their chest. At the 2026 men’s Tour de France, the UCI also banned ice socks in TTs for the same reason. That followed some aerodynamic research suggested they could act as a “chest fairing,” smoothing airflow and reducing drag.

The rumours at the Tour de France Femmes

According to WielerFlits, some teams believe a small number of riders might be wearing extra padding inside their sports bras during time trials to alter the shape of their chest and reduce aerodynamic drag. The practice is prohibited under UCI equipment regulations because it artificially changes a rider’s body shape.

Aerodynamics expert Bert Blocken, a professor at Heriot-Watt University in Scotland and LUT University in Finland, told the Dutch outlet that the concept is backed by science.

“We’re talking about a chest fairing, which changes the airflow around the body and reduces pressure on the thighs,” Blocken said. “You won’t gain tens of seconds. But think about a 20- to 30-km time trial can save enough seconds to make the difference.”

Blocken co-wrote research published in ScienceDirect that claims an optimally shaped chest fairing could reduce aerodynamic drag by as much as 3.6 per cent.

That works out to around 0.78 seconds per kilometre under ideal conditions. Not a lot, like he said, but hey, that’s something over a TT against the best in the world. The Stage 4 TT at the TdFF is from Gevrey-Chambertin to Dijon and is 21km long, for example. As we know in modern cycling, every tiny advantage helps.

Bra checks after the TT?

Blocken is the same guy that also spoke up about team cars stacking a dozen bikes on the roof racks to push riders along in a TT. Dude knows all about how people can bend the rules to get an unfair advantage. He also spoke a few years ago about using double discs in a TT, like Wout van Aert at the 2024 Olympics. (Which is allowed, of course, even if sketchy.)

The UCI rulebook states that clothing must not artificially modify a rider’s morphology. Riders found violating the regulation can be disqualified and fined.

“Items of clothing may not modify the morphology of the rider and any non-essential element or device, of which the purpose is not exclusively that of clothing or protection, is forbidden. This shall also apply regarding any material or substance applied onto the skin or clothing and which is not itself an item of clothing,” the rule states.

Tuesday’s time trial

Several teams have apparently said they would like to see post-race inspections conducted by female commissaires after Tuesday’s 21-km Tour de France Femmes time trial from Gevrey-Chambertin to Dijon to ensure riders are complying with the rules. This might be a very strange day at the Tour. It’ll make Lorena Wiebes being disqualified for having a bike that weighed about as much as a slice of cheese over the limit seem like nothing.

Anyway, racing continues at the Tour de France Femmes Monday with a punchy third Stage. You can watch the race at 9:45 a.m. EDT on Flobikes.com and Canadian Cycling Magazine will have a full report after.

Socks too high, you say?
