David Byrne<\/a> has shared his \u2018Biking Playlist\u2019 and reflected on the changing face of pop music \u2013 check out his picks below.<\/p>\n

The former Talking Heads<\/a> frontman is currently out on tour in support of his latest solo album \u2018Who Is\u00a0The\u00a0Sky?<\/a>\u2018. Released last September as his first studio record since 2018\u2019s \u2018American Utopia<\/a>\u2018, the record featured contributions from Hayley Williams<\/a>,\u00a0St.\u00a0Vincent<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0The Smile<\/a>\u2018s Tom Skinner.<\/p>\n

Whilst out on the road, he\u2019s been cycling to the tune of Olivia Rodrigo<\/a>, Sofia Isella, Phoebe Bridgers<\/a>, Mitski<\/a>, and more \u2013 which he\u2019s now compiled in the latest instalment of David Byrne Radio, titled \u201cBiking Playlist\u201d.<\/p>\n

He said the whole band had folding bikes that they travel with to explore the local areas, adding:\u00a0\u201cIf I have an afternoon off, I\u2019ll often go for a ride to clear my head. And if I\u2019m on my own and it\u2019s a secure path or not a busy road\u2026 I\u2019ll listen to this playlist.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

In a note accompanying the playlist, Byrne also shed light on his eclectic taste and understanding of pop music, arguing that the distinction between what\u2019s considered mainstream versus unconventional music is constantly changing.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I think of as pop music is broadly defined,\u201d he wrote. \u201cSome songs are, by consensus, mainstream, but even some of those often push at the edges. Others take the format, length and shape of pop songs, but to my ears they don\u2019t sound anything like the ones considered more mainstream.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat said, they\u2019re all equal in my book,\u201d he continued. \u201cI don\u2019t think of any of them as inside or outside \u2013 as I\u2019ve seen those definitions change with plenty of exceptions that prove the rules are meant to be broken.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The playlist arrived shortly after Byrne\u00a0joined\u00a0Anna Calvi<\/a> on stage in Halifax and Cardiff for performances\u00a0of\u00a0their collaborative track \u2018Strange Weather\u2019.<\/p>\n

NME\u00a0gave the \u2018Strange Weather\u2019 EP a three-and-a-half-star review back in 2014<\/a>, writing: \u201cIt\u2019s only worth doing a version of someone else\u2019s song if you bring something new to it. Anna Calvi certainly does that on this five-track EP of covers.\u00a0Potential\u00a0cover performers take note: this is how you do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

NME\u00a0was at his set at Mad Cool this summer<\/a>, describing it as a \u201cbonanza\u201d, adding:\u00a0\u201cAs he and his backing musicians moved\u00a0in formation\u00a0across the stage, video screens depicted a variety of\u00a0colourful\u00a0environs \u2013 waves, a misty forest \u2013 before the Talking Heads track \u2018Life During Wartime\u2019 was accompanied by images of brutal ICE raids.\u201d<\/p>\n

He will also be going on an intimate book tour in the UK to support his forthcoming book\u00a0Sleeping Beauties<\/a>.
