US men\u2019s national team head coach Mauricio Pochettino<\/a> and the US Soccer Federation have agreed to a contract extension that will keep Pochettino attached to the program through 2030, US Soccer announced on Monday.<\/p>\n

The two sides had been actively engaged in discussions on a contract extension for several months, long before the USMNT\u2019s disappointing, last-16 exit in this summer\u2019s World Cup, with the federation making it clear it desired Pochettino to stay. Conversations picked up in the weeks following the World Cup, with the Guardian reporting<\/a> last week that the sides had been in the \u201cfinal stages\u201d of agreeing to a deal. Financial details of the contract extension were not released, but Pochettino is expected to get a raise on top of the $6m per year he earned under his previous deal with the federation \u2013 already the largest outlay for a US head coach.<\/p>\n

The Guardian understands that billionaire hedge fund manager Ken Griffin, who bankrolled US Soccer\u2019s initial contract with Pochettino, will once again be the primary funder for the new deal. A source familiar with the agreement characterized Pochettino\u2019s return as being in an \u201cexpanded role.\u201d Another source said the primary focus of Pochettino and his staff will be on the senior US team, while the federation\u2019s announcement said that the coaching staff will \u201cadvise and support\u201d the federation on \u201cthe broader development of the full national team pathway, youth soccer, coaching education, professional league collaboration and other technical facets across the soccer community.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt has become clear to us that there is tremendous potential to make the men\u2019s national team program even stronger,\u201d Pochettino said in US Soccer\u2019s announcement. \u201cThe passion we experienced from the fans throughout the World Cup<\/a> only strengthened our belief in what is possible here. We are excited by the opportunity to bring all our experience and knowledge to even more areas of U.S. Soccer while helping strengthen the pathways for players, coaches and teams across the Federation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Under Pochettino, the US\u2019s World Cup got off to a bright start and featured arguably the program\u2019s best-ever performance at the tournament, a comprehensive, 4-1 dismantling of Paraguay<\/a> in their group-stage opener. Strong efforts against Australia and Bosnia and Herzegovina followed, setting the stage for the last-16 encounter with Belgium. The US were outclassed in every way in that match, with Pochettino \u2013 along with many players \u2013 taking the brunt of the blame for the loss.<\/p>\n

Pochettino is widely liked by players and staff, with some crediting the coach for overhauling the group\u2019s mentality. He clashed with some players who he felt weren\u2019t fully committed, most notably Milan midfielder Christian Pulisic, going as far as to air his grievances publicly. His relationship with the media also came under scrutiny<\/a> in his tenure, the result of a handful of dust-ups with reporters and journalists who cover the team regularly.<\/p>\n

After the USMNT\u2019s crashout against Belgium, Pochettino expressed pride in the work his staff had done with players. He had been at the helm for about 20 months at that point, and Pochettino suggested that the truncated tenure had only been enough to evaluate the group properly and put standards and practices in place.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith good things and not so good things,\u201d Pochettino told the Guardian after the Belgium loss, \u201cit was amazing, this journey. It still hasn\u2019t been two years working here. And we all know that a process is about a four-year cycle. Today I think we closed the chapter about assessing players, playing in that competition that is so difficult. I think now we have a complete assessment from a lot of players, and if we commit to be here in the future, we have a clear idea of our decisions for the future \u2013 before, it was very difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n

During his time with the US, Pochettino has put together a respectable record of 18 wins, 12 losses and one draw. His early struggles included a fourth-place finish in the 2025 Nations League and a loss to Mexico in the final of the Gold Cup, a tournament he navigated with a heavily rotated squad. He did have his highlights \u2013 the electrifying start to this summer\u2019s World Cup, and a 5-1 thrashing of Uruguay<\/a> in a friendly that ranks as one of the program\u2019s most surprising results.<\/p>\n

Still, Pochettino was largely hired to do one job: advance the US past the last 16 and into the quarter-finals at a home World Cup.
