Welcome to another edition of CNBC&#8217;s Daily Open.<\/p>\n<p>Japan, having intervened to prop its weakening currency to little effect in the past, roped in the U.S. to stage a coordinated intervention last week. For now, the currency&#8217;s strength seems to be holding, but experts have doubts that it will last. <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, U.S. markets continued strengthening on a tech-fueled rally, with the S&amp;P 500 within striking distance of its all-time high. <\/p>\n<p><a id=\"headline0\"\/>What you need to know today<\/p>\n<p>In the recent past, Japan has stepped in to support its currency, only to watch it weaken again as rate differentials and soft fundamentals pulled it back down the road. But this time, Tokyo is not driving alone. <\/p>\n<p>The latest fast and furious intervention to prevent Tokyo&#8217;s currency from drifting involved Washington, giving speculators reason to pause. But will this coordinated push accomplish what Japan&#8217;s solo efforts could not achieve?<\/p>\n<p>Washington is bringing some serious heft to its action. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent wants the Federal Reserve to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/08\/03\/bessent-fed-japan-yen-fima-repo-facility.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">expand a lending facility<\/a> that would enable Japan to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/08\/03\/japan-yen-intervention-us-treasurys-euros-.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">support its currency<\/a>\u00a0without roiling the sensitive\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/markets\/us-treasurys\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Treasury<\/a>\u00a0market.<\/p>\n<p>For now, the yen&#8217;s strength is still holding up, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/08\/03\/yen-us-intervention-japan-market-currency.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">analysts are doubtful<\/a> it can be sustained. &#8220;Japan&#8217;s policy mix remains unlikely to generate sustained yen strength,&#8221; wrote UBS strategists Teck Leng Tan and Dominic Schnider. <\/p>\n<p>Other experts say that unless Japan addresses the structural forces driving the weakness in yen, the intervention&#8217;s effects are likely to be short-lived. <\/p>\n<p>Over in the U.S. markets, all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/08\/02\/stock-market-today-live-updates.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">three major indexes gained<\/a> as tech stocks continued to rally, with the S&amp;P 500 about 0.3% away from the all-time high it reached in early June.<\/p>\n<p>Amazon shares gained 4% and hit a new all-time high on Monday, putting its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/08\/03\/amazon-amzn-stock-market-cap-earnings.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">market cap over the $3 trillion<\/a> threshold for the first time following a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/07\/30\/amazon-amzn-q2-earnings-report-2026.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">better-than-expected earnings report<\/a>\u00a0last week.
