We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Your support makes all the difference.Read more<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/house-of-the-dragon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">House of the Dragon<\/a> continued to deviate from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/george-rr-martin\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">George RR Martin<\/a>\u2019s source material in its latest episode \u2013 but the director has \u201ccontroversially\u201d insisted the changes were necessary. <\/p>\n<p>Martin has distanced himself from the hit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/hbo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">HBO<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/game-of-thrones-0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Game of Thrones<\/a> prequel, which began in 2022, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/tv\/news\/george-rr-martin-criticisms-house-of-the-dragon-ryan-condal-b2725189.html\">detailing his issues<\/a> with showrunner Ryan Condal over several amendments. <\/p>\n<p>These changes have kept coming in the show\u2019s third season, with its latest instalment featuring a first look at Dreamfyre, a dragon who, in Martin\u2019s book Fire &amp; Blood, is bonded to Helaena Targaryen (Phia Sabana).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screenshot-2026-08-03-at-10-27-39.png\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Phia Saban's Haelana is at centre of big 'House of the Dragon' book changes\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>Phia Saban&#8217;s Haelana is at centre of big &#8216;House of the Dragon&#8217; book changes (HBO)<\/p>\n<p>Generally speaking, the TV show presents a far less formidable version of Helaena than the novel \u2013 one who refuses to fly a dragon, believing she would be corrupted if she did so.<\/p>\n<p>The latest episode featured a vision of the future, absent from the books, which depicts the usually insular Helaena confidently astride Dreamfyre, ordering her to breathe fire upon a small army marching her way.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, the kidnapping of Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint) by Ormund Hightower (James Norton) is another huge deviation \u2013\u00a0not to mention his rift with former ally Rhaenyra (Emma D\u2019Arcy).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screenshot-2026-08-03-at-10-32-26.png\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Lord Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint) in 'House of the Dragon'\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>Lord Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint) in &#8216;House of the Dragon&#8217; (HBO)<\/p>\n<p>Addressing these revisions, director Nina Lopez-Corrado said they help enhance what\u2019s to come in the season three finale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do deviate just a little bit in episode seven from what\u2019s originally in the books and, personally, from a character standpoint, what Ryan [Condal, showrunner] and the writers did in terms of that really helped evolve the character storylines from what were in the books,\u201d she told <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/house-of-the-dragon-sunfyre-return-dreamfyre-reveal-season-3-director-interview-12032370\">Entertainment Weekly<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201dI know that\u2019s a very controversial thing to say for diehards, but I think some of the storylines that you\u2019re gonna see in [episode] seven that\u2019ll carry on into eight were really executed strongly by the writers and also by the actors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The forthcoming eighth episode will serve as the season three finale, teeing up the action for a fourth and final season of the spin-off series. The last episode is set to feature the Battle of Tumbleton, one of the book\u2019s most deadly conflicts. <\/p>\n<p>Posting on his blog in August 2024, Martin said that there were \u201clarger and more toxic\u201d changes being made to the series in both season three and four. <\/p>\n<p>The Game of Thrones author, who has a co-creator and executive producer credit on the show, said he had a \u201cpretty wretched year\u201d and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/tv\/news\/george-rr-martin-hbo-house-dragon-b2612141.html\">wasn\u2019t looking forward to writing \u201cabout everything that\u2019s gone wrong with House of the Dragon\u201d<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screenshot-2026-04-14-at-10-00-07.png\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"'Game of Thrones' author George RR Martin has issues with \u2018House of the Dragon\u2019\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>&#8216;Game of Thrones&#8217; author George RR Martin has issues with \u2018House of the Dragon\u2019 (Getty)<\/p>\n<p>Condal has addressed the \u201cdisappointing\u201d criticism, explaining that the source material was not a straightforward narrative and required a looser interpretation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was disappointing,\u201d Condal told Entertainment Weekly of Martin\u2019s comments. \u201cI will simply say I\u2019ve been a fan of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/a-song-of-ice-and-fire\">A Song of Ice and Fire<\/a> for almost 25 years now, and working on the show has been truly one of the great privileges of, not only my career as a writer, but my life as a fan of science-fiction and fantasy. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cGeorge himself is a monument, a literary icon in addition to a personal hero of mine, and was heavily influential on me coming up as a writer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s this incomplete history and it requires a lot of joining of the dots and a lot of invention as you go along the way,\u201d Condal said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will simply say, I made every effort to include George in the adaptation process. I really did. Over years and years. And we really enjoyed a mutually fruitful, I thought, really strong collaboration for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut at some point, as we got deeper down the road, he just became unwilling to acknowledge the practical issues at hand in a reasonable way. And I think as a showrunner, I have to keep my practical producer hat on and my creative writer, lover-of-the-material hat on at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the end of the day, I just have to keep marching not only the writing process forward, but also the practical parts of the process forward for the sake of the crew, the cast, and for HBO, because that\u2019s my job,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I can only hope that George and I can rediscover that harmony someday.
