Not every show can be South Park<\/a> or even The Daily Show<\/a>. As Donald Trump continues his war on the media\u2014one which has already seen a capitulating settlement<\/a> from Paramount and disastrous funding cuts<\/a> for NPR and PBS\u2014many have expressed concern<\/a> that outright censorship is just around the corner. According to TV legend Shonda Rhimes, it\u2019s already here\u2014whether the president specifically requested it or not.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt definitely feels that way to a lot of people, that there is self-censoring going on,\u201d Rhimes said during an appearance at the Edinburgh TV festival, per Deadline<\/a>. Her claim reportedly came after she was asked about Paramount and Disney<\/a>\u2018s respective settlements with the litigious president, which she said she could not directly comment on.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Whether or not Rhimes could directly weigh in on either company\u2019s decision making behind the scenes, we have already seen this sort of censorship from both. Apart from the controversial decision to cancel Stephen Colbert\u2019s Late Show<\/a> (which Paramount-owned CBS claimed was \u201cpurely a financial decision\u201d), Paramount\u2019s new bosses have also vowed to eliminate DEI at the company<\/a>. Disney has also repeatedly made headlines for cutting queer storylines in projects like Elio<\/a> and last year\u2019s Win Or Lose<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Thankfully, the Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/a> mastermind still feels she has the power to \u201cmake the shows that matter to me.\u201d She\u2019s certainly felt the heat from this administration in other ways, though. Rhimes was among the many luminaries to cut ties with the Kennedy Center<\/a> after Trump appointed himself chairman in February. \u201cI stayed on that board through his appointment, mainly because I was the treasurer of the Kennedy Center, so it was my duty\u2026 to ask all the smart fiduciary questions while they were making that transition,\u201d she said. \u201cBut once that transition was made, I literally was the only person left who was an artist, who was of the old regime of the Kennedy Center\u2026 and therefore, in my mind, it wasn\u2019t a board anymore. It\u2019s certainly not the board with the same mission as when I came in.\u201d<\/p>\n
