Canada’s First Nations have called for urgent support as one of the most intense wildfire seasons in history rips through Indigenous communities.

There have been at least 130 wildfires spreading across the British Columbia province in southwestern Canada since Friday, half of which have been considered ‘out of control’ by emergency services. More than 5000 people across the province have been evacuated.

Wildfire services said drought conditions are at record levels and have created an ‘explosive’ fire behaviour.

The Indigenous Peoples Resilience Fund, created by and for Indigenous Peoples, moves flexible resources quickly and with as few barriers as possible. Its Wildfire Response Fund will support urgent needs including food, accommodation, transportation, communications, culturally grounded wellness support, and community-led recovery.

At least two First Nation communities were razed to the ground in late July. Leaders said they received no warning from government or local services.

‘If this community waited for a mandatory evacuation process, we’d be doing a recovery mission for the bodies of children, of elders, of men and women,’ Linda Debassige, grand council chief of the Anishinabek Nation, which represents 39 Ontario First Nations, told the Guardian.

Namaygoosisagagun First Nation evacuated safely and received assistance from the nearby Anishinabek Nation.

Other First Nations have not been so lucky. The Whitewater Lake First Nation was destroyed by wildfires, with community infrastructure all but gone. The community has mostly seasonal residences with no full-time residents.

At least 1,000 wildfires burned across Canada in July, with about 200 in Ontario. Prime minister Mark Carney said heatwaves and dry weather had combined to create ‘one of the most intense wildfire seasons in Canadian history’.

First Nations communities are on the frontlines of wildfires. According to the Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction, 80 percent of Indigenous communities live in areas more susceptible to fires.

The Canadian wildfires have gone as far as reducing solar power in Europe. Wildfires also appeared in the US state of Washington, close to the southern Canadian wildfires, burning through 250,000 acres and causing power outages.

Shafi Musaddique is the news editor at Alliance magazine

Canada’s First Nations have called for urgent support as one of the most intense wildfire seasons in history…

[4
49,48,44
post-845811","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-canada","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-news
["GET
