But I need to say that this couldn’t be further from the truth. Sometimes, you have to set boundaries. Human beings may need a break from time to time.”

Speculation rampant online after announcement

Online, a debate with a familiar pattern has been brewing since the 2024 media tour for Wicked: fans express concern, but the conversation quickly shifts into body-focused speculation.

Despite Grande — who rose to fame as a child star on Nickelodeon — never directly acknowledging any health issues, she’s become a frequent subject of discussion on social media.

Pop culture expert Zorianna Zurba, an assistant professor at Toronto Metropolitan University, says Grande happens to be at the centre of a cluster of interconnected issues.

“On the one hand, we have diet culture that’s gotten to a new height over the last couple years,” Zurba told CBC News. “We also have stars coming out who are promoting the use of Ozempic. We also have a rise in misogyny and commenting on women’s choices, women’s bodies.

“Here, we have Ariana and speculation around her body, speculation around maybe health issues, mental health issues around her body. And she really seems to be caught in the sort of perfect storm within this constellation of issues.”

Zurba said social media also reshapes fandom in a way that can blur boundaries — fans feel close enough to respond as if their commentary belongs in the public sphere.

“We have these parasocial relationships through social media and so fans can have very quick interactions with celebrities, repost some of their posts. It can feel very intimate,” she said.

“It can make it feel as though our commentary is welcome.”

Zurba warned that what gets “lost or forgotten” is the distinction between the public and the private spheres.

How to reframe the conversation

Texas-based psychologist and author Dr. Vanessa Scaringi, who offers specialized outpatient therapy for eating disorders, anxiety and self-awareness, says the issue isn’t about any single celebrity.

“Nuance is so lost in the online forum,” Scaringi said, emphasizing the more the conversation narrows to bodies, the more it becomes a harmful feedback loop, especially when speculation gets normalized as “concern.”

She said that if people talk about what they’re seeing with care, the conversation can be “healing” instead of harmful.

For educators and platforms, Scaringi said the aim should be to reduce attention to appearance while increasing discussion of meaning, identity and worth beyond the body.

She notes that breaks from social media can help — but that algorithms can still push image-heavy content. “Taking breaks is important,” she said, “but also you can’t escape it.”

As for Grande’s decision to step back, Scaringi says she hopes the singer can surround herself with people who will help give her some space and insulate her from the constant scrutiny.

“I think we need to follow her lead. Like, OK, we’ll take a break, too.”

Ariana Grande spoke directly to her fans at a Chicago concert on Monday, saying she wanted to “clear…

[32
49,48,361,75
post-846277","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-celebrities","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-celebrities","tag-entertainment
["GET
